I have found out that StarDict doesn't support Babylon dictionaries and that I need to convert them. I found dictconv tool to convert Babylon dictionaries into StarDict dictionary. dictconv converts very well but once I add it to StarDict and want to see the result, StarDict shows results along with HTML tags, the result looks like this:

I usually use Babylon dictionary while translating. Babylon has an OCR feature that when you press the middle button of the mouse on a word, it automatically identifies the word and shows the translation. This feature works very well in other translation management software like MemoQ and Wordfast. But unfortunately, it doesn't work on Trados Studio and Babylon OCR cannot identify the words (I guess Trados doesn't permit Babylon to do that). Is there any way to make Trados allow us to use OCR while translating?

In the case of the three glossaries you ask about (babylon, oxford, longman), the first has no licence attached. Copyright law's default position is clear; assuming that a work is eligible for copyright protection at all, it acquires such protection by the act of its creation, so you can do next to nothing with it without violating that copyright. You certainly can't make a copy of it, for use with your app or otherwise. The other two are known to be commercial glossaries, and it is unlikely that they will be supplied to you under licence terms that permit their reuse in that way (that could be wrong, but you won't know until you read each licence).

Place all these 3 files in /usr/share/stardict/dic/ creating a separate folder for each dictionary. Then rebook Stardict and go to Manage Dictionary (bottom right): there you can select what comes first, activate or deactivate etc etc

Hi,

I just converted the babylon dictionary .bgl to .ifo. there are three files just like you said. .dict, .idx, .ifo. I copied them to /usr/share/stardict/dic/ and created a folder for them. but I can not find it in the stardict. I found the other dictionaries which are from the stardict contain a file .dz. why I do not have that file after converting?

hi Michiel, yes the tutorial above is for Linux only, pretty much everything you can find on this website applies to Linux only because this is Opensuse website and Opensuse is a Linux distro.

I have no idea how to do that in Windows as i barely ever use windows systems, anyway i think your best bet is googling it, or use babylon directly, since you are in windows you can do that, the rationale behind this tutorial is that there is no babylon software for linux ff782bc1db
