There are so many planning tools out there that it can be overwhelming to figure out a system that works. To be clear, I use a variety of tools to keep myself organized for my business and in my personal life. My weekly planner pad brings those elements together for what needs to happen, one day at a time.

When you have a weekly habit and want to see on which days exactly you tracked it, change the habit temporarily to a many-times daily habit. You can think of weekly habits as a different view on top of regular daily habits.

While "once" habits can be tracked only once in a given period (a day or a week) and are considered complete when a single activity is tracked, "many-times" habits, as the name suggests, can be tracked multiple times within a single period, i.e. "Take medication three times a day".

To make a habit a many-times habit, open habit detail by hovering over the name of the habit in the list and click the settings icon that shows up. Then, in the habit detail, set "allow to track" to "many times".

You can optionally also set a goal for many-times habits. For example, if the goal is set to "3", Lunatask won't consider the habit complete until three activities are tracked within the period. Setting the goal for many-times habits is important, so your current and record streaks are calculated correctly.

Bad habits do not show in the habit widget and cannot be scheduled onto the calendar. They also do not count into the number of incomplete habits on the habit tracker menu item (see our article on badges and notifications for more information), and current/record streaks are not calculated for them.

Both habits and recurring tasks are activities you regularly perform at set intervals, so they naturally overlap. It is up to you whether you decide to use a habit or recurring task for a specific activity.

We often get asked what the numbers in the habit tracker represent. The number on the last activity in a block of consecutive activities is your current streak, and the number all the way on the right is your past record streak. These serve to motivate you to beat your past best.

Hovering over a time-block for a habit on the calendar will show an icon to complete the habit. Once the habit is completed, and an activity is tracked, the time-block will be removed from the calendar.

The habit widget shows your habits one by one in the order they are defined in the habit tracker. When the habit is completed or skipped, the habit widget will show the next habit in line. When the habit is dragged onto the calendar at a future time, the habit widget will also start showing the next habit for you to decide what to do with it.

The field for "at time" does respect the time-display format set in the settings (whether you are using 12h or 24h time format). Instead, it takes the format from your system locale/region. It is a limitation of our current implementation.

Use the 21-Day Planner

The 21-Day Planner is a great catalyst for change. It fits perfectly in your planner binder or your bag, and it includes great reminders such as the Productivity Pyramid and the Time Matrix to help you determine the most effective use of your time. It also offers a weekly and daily format so you can decide which works best for you.

Stay accountable

Keep yourself accountable by tracking your progress. Mark your planner each time you successfully act on your plan. Taking note of your success will motivate you to do more. So we compiled this list of 100 (!) habits that you can track daily, weekly, or monthly. They are broken down into categories so that you can pull from these ideas based on your priorities. Meal planning looks and feels different to every person/household. Like the planner we choose or how often we do laundry, meal planning is individual and should meet the unique demands of your specific lifestyle.

With your meal plan now fully hashed out, translate the required ingredients for the meals you selected to your weekly grocery list. Again, having all your recipes gathered, organized, and sorted will will allow you to add ingredients to your list without much extra work.

(Once our weekly menu is hashed out, I then locate each recipe within my Recipe Binder and add all the ingredients to my shopping list. I like to print my Weekly Planner and Grocery List back-to-back so everything is on a single sheet.)

Although all the ingredients for your meals are now accounted for on your list, your final task is to fill your grocery list with other pantry staples and refrigerator/freezer items you may need. Assess each area of your kitchen, adding items when needed and crossing off recipe ingredients you already have on hand.

The final step is to make your meal planning process a habit. This last part is certainly easier said than done; but if you commit to the process of finding the right system for your lifestyle, it will stick and it will be worth it.

When I use this method, I save money by shopping for a smaller variety of ingredients and time by preparing fewer meals. These benefits alone are usually enough to keep me on bored with cooking during busy seasons.

Journaling allows me to explore my thoughts and feelings in such a way that my true desires begin to emerge. Once I see the things I want to bring into my life, I set about making daily plans to make them happen.

The planning can involve anything from writing out my desires in my daily goals list, following a habit tracker to take small steps toward that goal, or making incremental progress at certain times of the month or year. But, before I could set up this system, I had to start by making journaling and planning habits on their own.
