I started using Spiceworks a few weeks ago (hadn't tried it in years- looks wonderful now!, just running on an old XP machine!) to see if I could make a quick network map. The maps I see so far are quite unusable. I was hoping for a network map like I used to get from 3Com network supervisor (with 3com switches (which I have recently replace with HP, and no longer map the same).

Deploy high-performance, feature-rich Ethernet LAN switching. This affordable, intelligent 10/100BASE-TX switch is fully manageable, making it ideal for networks of any size. Wire-speed performance, support for network telephony, and two uplink slots accommodate demanding applications. Optional plug-in modules offer resilient high-speed connectivity

3Com Network Supervisor is an easy-to-use management application that graphically discovers, maps, and displays network links and IP devices, including 3Com NBX telephones and some popular third-party products.

It maps devices and connections so you can easily monitor stress levels, set thresholds and alerts, view network events, generate reports in user-defined formats, and launch device configuration tools. What's more, when your network changes, you can prompt 3Com Network Supervisor to regenerate the appropriate part of the map to ensure that you have current information.

Automated operations, intelligent defaults, and the ability to detect network misconfigurations and offer optimization suggestions make this application ideal for network managers with all levels of experience.

- Discovers and manages up to 1,500 IP devices and 3Com NBX telephones

- To help solve problems fast, a Smart Event Engine automatically detects and classifies correlated and recurring events

- Supports networks that use multiple community strings

- Alarm forwarding via e-mail, pager, or SMS messages lets administrators keep in touch with the network while away from the management console; the application can also forward SNMP traps to other network management systems, such as HP OpenView

- Graphical interface helps administrators easily configure discovery boundaries to include specific subnets, enable or disable activity threshold alerts, and generate reports on network topology, device inventory, and port capacity

- Presents a network map either grouped by IP subnet or as a flat Layer 2 view of the entire network

- Optimizes and troubleshoots end-node connectivity by tracing the paths between any two nodes on the network

- Complementary Palm Companion application lets administrators download part of the 3Com Network Supervisor database to a Palm-compatible handheld organizer, so they can take 3Com Network Supervisor information with them

- Live update feature connects over the web to retrieve application updates and device support, so your management software stays up to date.

Notes:

Port numbers in computer networking represent communication endpoints. Ports are unsigned 16-bit integers (0-65535) that identify a specific process, or network service. IANA is responsible for internet protocol resources, including the registration of commonly used port numbers for well-known internet services.

Well Known Ports: 0 through 1023.

Registered Ports: 1024 through 49151.

Dynamic/Private : 49152 through 65535.

TCP ports use the Transmission Control Protocol, the most commonly used protocol on the Internet and any TCP/IP network. TCP enables two hosts to establish a connection and exchange streams of data. TCP guarantees delivery of data and that packets will be delivered in the same order in which they were sent. Guaranteed communication/delivery is the key difference between TCP and UDP.

UDP ports use the Datagram Protocol. Like TCP, UDP is used in combination with IP (the Internet Protocol) and facilitates the transmission of datagrams from one computer to applications on another computer, but unlike TCP, UDP is connectionless and does not guarantee reliable communication; it's up to the application that received the message to process any errors and verify correct delivery. UDP is often used with time-sensitive applications, such as audio/video streaming and realtime gaming, where dropping some packets is preferable to waiting for delayed data.

When troubleshooting unknown open ports, it is useful to find exactly what services/processes are listening to them. This can be accomplished in both Windows command prompt and Linux variants using the "netstat -aon" command. We also recommend runnig multiple anti-virus/anti-malware scans to rule out the possibility of active malicious software. For more detailed and personalized help please use our forums.

3Com stands for "Computer Communication Compatibility". 3Com is a provider of network interface controller and switches, routers, wireless access points and controllers, etc. With OpManager, you can keep an eye on which ports are getting used the most and have the highest throughput and bandwidth going through them on your 3Com Routers/Switches. OpManager, a 3com switch monitoring tool, can sniff through packets of data, alert you for abnormalities in switches or any of their ports, narrow down network saturation problems and fix them before you blink.

In order to avoid major network mishaps and downtime that can cause business losses amounting to millions, it is vital to monitor switch port usage, capacity and availability checking for capacity planning, quickly track & identify network devices by IP address, and hostname within the network. Having a 3Com network monitoring tool which also offers multi-vendor networking switch support enables the management of hybrid networks with ease.

OpManager's alerts are based on the real network needs defined by and modified by admins and operators. OpManager also has a great GUI for quickly getting your network switches managed and understanding what is going on within them.

The switch provides 24 switched autosensing 10/100BASE-TX Ethernet/Fast Ethernet ports for higher-density networking. Mix and match any SuperStack II Switch 1100s or SuperStack 3 Switch 3300s in one stack, or stack them together using a matrix cable for two units. ff782bc1db
