After listening to a lot of bluetooth speakers of all sizes, brands etc I have compiled a list of general observations that can help deduce real life performance by looking at the specs of the speaker specially drivers:

Configuration of drivers ( one driver mono i.e only one full range driver, two driver mono i.e tweeter + woofer, one driver per channel stereo i.e two full range drivers, two drivers per channel stereo i.e two tweeters+ two woofers, 3 driver stereo i.e two tweeters, one for each channel + one larger woofer for mids and bass of both channels).

Recently many manufacturers have been moving from one driver mono/one driver stereo to a two driver mono. By doing this they can fit a larger woofer for deeper bass(in hz) and more bass(in db) and put a crossover between woofer and tweeter. This is a much efficient design than one driver mono or in some cases even a one driver stereo.

In the case of a single driver mono just one driver can not cover the entire spectrum of sound (whatever be the size of the driver) from say deep bass of atleast 50hz to atleast 12khz treble sparkle. in this kind of a speaker one of the side of the spectrum will definitely suffer.. either the bass will not be deep or the treble will be very dull sounding. This is what we call low clarity, dull sound, low instrument separation or a muddy sound, as one driver is making the entire spectrum. eg beoplay A1, Flip 5, charge 4, most of the ultra portable pocket sized speakers etc. Also there is no soundstage to talk about in this configuration as theres just one driver in all.

Bose speakers are an exception to this generalisation as majority of the latest gen bose speakers are one driver mono but cover the entire spectrum pretty well eg - bose portable home speaker, revolve, revolve+, home speaker 300 etc. The reason is Bose tunes its speaker towards treble side of the spectrum but uses clever acoustics to better the bass response. This is also the reason why bass from all the bose speakers is present but soft. Most of them are 360 degree speakers so again no soundstage to talk about. Soundstage can only come in a stereo setup but a stereo setup might not necessarily give you clarity.

2. Now this single driver mono design can be converted to two full range driver stereo. eg - motion boom, soundcore boost, xb33, tribit maxsound plus etc. This improves the soundstage and separation but still the issue of either clarity / lack of bass remains. The drivers can be tuned towards one side of the spectrum - bass or treble. The reason why all the above mentioned speakers are generally said to lack either clarity or bass.

3. Next configuration is a two driver mono - one woofer + one tweeter. A cross over is programmed in the dsp to send lows and mids to woofer and highs to tweeter, both the drivers can function much more efficiently as compared to just one driver for everything. Mids and bass are done by the full range driver and highs are done by the tweeter. Deeper and more bass is solved as one larger woofer(instead of two smaller ones) can be fitted in the same sized speaker enclosure and clarity is solved by using a dedicated tweeter. eg rave neo, charge 5, Onyx studio 5,6, sonos move, sonos one, sonos roam. The downside of this configuration is the soundstage, airiness and separation between channels.

4. next configuration is a 4 driver stereo with 2 woofers and 2 tweeters. this is one of the most efficient configuration that achieves 3 aspects - deep and more bass, clarity, and soundstage but lacks a tiny bit in deep bass from the 3rd configuration. eg motion plus, xtreme 2,3, partyboxes, boombox 1,2, harman kardon go play, xb43, etc. The bass would a little less deep than their two driver mono counterpart.

Charge 5 has deeper bass than motion plus because of larger woofer driver size than m+, has similar clarity of motion plus because of two driver mono, lacks the soundstage of motion plus because of two driver mono and not stereo.

Onyx studio has deeper bass than go play because of larger woofer size than go play, has similar clarity of go play because of two driver mono, lacks the sound stage of go play because of two driver mono and not stereo.

The bass amount and depth is within 5% of each other within these 3. Motion boom lacks clarity due to two driver stereo, Rave neo lacks soundstage due to two driver mono. Xtreme has complete configuration with two woofers and two tweeters(how the sound signature is tuned or what the price is , thats subjective).

I have only taken examples of speakers that are most talked about on the forum but the above criteria can be applied to any speaker. There will definitely be exceptions and those speakers will be priced much higher than speakers of same class like revolve + and bose portable home speaker, as there will be some kind of wizardry(like making a single driver mono speaker in a 360 degree format, so as to give an illusion of soundstage) that will be used to achieve those specific aspects. e24fc04721
