Another portrait of the suicidal mind, by me.
The saying "the door is always open" to me, means that one can choose to end their lives whenever they would like, and therefore it doesn't have to happen immediately. Heavily inspired by Clancy Martin’s How To Not Kill Yourself (2023), I put together scenes made out of projection, LCD screens, and a rag doll to portray those moments; where one can tell themselves "i can do this later".
This concept still seems to be a taboo, where everyone already knows someone who has committed suicide. You’ve either heard of a distant relative, friend of a friend, a celebrity. It is always here, hiding in the dark. I don’t want it to be hidden in the dark.
We disregard personal suffering, thinking of coping mechanisms as an escape rather than investigating where our pain stems. I am bored by that way of thinking. I urge you to talk to the people in your life who are in pain, and to check in with them.
That said, let me explain the project.
Around the start of 2025, I picked up the book. I read through it in a week. The book finally provided me with an intelligent conversation on under what rationality people commit suicide.
Not particularly a fan of suicide, for what it's taken from me. But I'd like to think I know its sibling depression pretty well.
Reading through the pages, I decided the create instances of depressive episodes using a doll.
These posters of text that flash as overlays on the screen are supposed to mimic instrusive thoughts. You will try to ignore them, but they tend to persist.
A handmade rag doll that I drew out myself. The doll is made out of blank fabric, stuffed with wool. It has a wire internal skeleton, so that it may be posed in various ways. It will hold the LCD screen,
There is an LCD screen on my doll's body. It run texts of reaffirming messages. The screen represents the validating voice that tries to keep us grounded. Of course during depressive episodes, the thing that's supposed to grounded feels even more artificial. Hence, the screen being digital.
Supported by sound, this is where the atmosphere comes into play. I will make 2D scenes and project them from 2 angles to create a 3D environment around the doll in the gallery.
