Don't Waste It! is a Criteria I workshop with the North Carolina Environmental Education Certification Program. Criteria I workshops must be a minimum of 6 contact hours but can be up to 10 hours. If you host a workshop that is 6-7 hours, participants can choose to complete a homework assignment to receive the additional hours.
A homework form has been provided for you in the Google Folder- remember to update the contact information to your own (highlighted in yellow). They have a year to complete the homework, then you can send them an EE Form with the additional hours and details explaining the homework.
The Don’t Waste It! guide references several additional activities that can be paired with many different lessons. All the materials needed for each activity is provided (for free) on the Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling website, under the Educator Check Out Program: www.chathamcountync.gov/education
The activities include:
Waste Pizza– Students use Chatham County’s Waste Composition Study to put together an interactive pie chart of materials disposed of by residents.
Waste Stream Dice Game– This active game teaches students about the life cycles of the items we throw out or recycle.
Garbage to Gardens– This is an adapted version of the Waste Stream Dice Game that goes through the composting cycle.
Recycled Paper Making– Discover the science of making paper from…paper! This hands-on, somewhat messy, activity is tons of fun for all ages.
Landfill in a Bottle– By making their own mini version, students will understand the process and composition of a landfill.
Sort It Out Relay– In this fast-paced game, students will race to sort several items into the correct bins.
