A popular area for bars and pubs, especially in the evening. It is a great place to meet other participants after the talks, have a drink some snacks, and continue discussions in a relaxed setting.
We recommend:
Jhring's Wirtshaus, with their famous self-service beer tables.
Wirtshaus Apfelbaum, with their nice Benediktinier Biergarten under good weather.
Probably one of the most well-known quick food spots in Gießen. If you would like to try some of the best Döner in Gießen and the surrounding area, this is the place to go.
We recommend:
The Plockstraße is hard to miss, right at the entrence you'll find the "3 Schwätzer". It's a great place to spend some time, especially in the evening. With the patisserie Geißner, awarded Germany's best confectionery in 2024, and the cocktail bar Tayfun's, offering delicious coktails or mocktails. It's a nice spot to just simply walk around, grab something sweet or a drink and enjoy the atmosphere with your friends.
Another great and more affordable cocktail bar is La Barcia or Milk & Sugar. We also recommend the Weinstube for an affordable night with great wines and cheeses.
If you're in the mood for something sweet, the Crêpes stand is a great option.
Participants arriving early on Wednesday have the chance to visit the weekly farmers market from 07:00 to 14:00. It is a nice way to get a first impression of the city and local atmosphere before the conference begins.
If you're already in Gießen, you absolutely shouldn’t miss its most famous landmark, the Elefantenklo.
For those who would like to be active, Level 8 Bouldering Gym or DAV Kletter- und Boulderzentrum is a great option.
If you prefer something quieter, the Botanical Garden is a lovely place for a walk. The Gießen Botanical Garden, established in 1609, is the oldest of those botanical gardens north of the Alps that are still located at their original site today. The garden features an impressive collection of around 400 species of trees and shrubs, including historic specimens such as a ginkgo tree planted in 1816. You can also explore themed areas like the evolutionary trail, alpine garden, and four different greenhouses there.
The entrance is located at the end of Sonnenstraße.
