Welcome to the Department of Justice website, a public service agency that has been serving the people of America for over 130 years. The Department's mission is to provide quality customer service and a secure, crime-free environment for our citizens and the people of the world.
Our dedicated law enforcement, criminal justice and tax professionals are committed to protecting and promoting the interests of the American people by:
• Protecting the public safety by providing for effective prevention, investigation and prosecution of criminal, civil and regulatory violations.
• Promoting national unity by ensuring equal enforcement and interpretation of the laws and Constitution.
• Promoting economic growth by assuring the efficient administration and collection of all taxes and the enforcement of the trade and labor laws.
The Department enforces the laws and U.S. policies, and provides justice services in America. Our work includes enforcing federal laws and investigating crimes, managing the nation's courts, managing prisons, and protecting U.S. Customs. In addition, we defend the U.S. before the Supreme Court and international courts, handle disputes involving the U.S., collect revenue from the customs office, and oversee the administration of federal judicial and law enforcement agencies. We have offices all around the country, including the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), which is the primary organization within the Department that administers the laws and regulations of the nation. The Department consists of more than 400,000 employees, most of whom work for the DOJ.
The Department promotes the fair and equal administration of justice and the protection of the constitutional rights of all Americans. We value fair and equitable treatment, respect for the individual and due process of law. We strive for excellence in the performance of our responsibilities.
We are committed to upholding the highest ethical and moral standards, and the public trust in our work. We are responsible and accountable to our fellow citizens and the general public for our actions. We adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct.
The Department exists to serve the public. We treat people with respect and compassion. We are dedicated to excellence in the performance of our duties, and are dedicated to the protection and enhancement of our environment.
The Department treats everyone fairly and equally, and encourages the development of a diverse, multi-cultural workforce. We value the contribution of all individuals in the pursuit of excellence. We recognize and reward the contributions of all.
The Department of Justice has a dual responsibility. It is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of cases of alleged wrongdoing, and for the administration of the laws, regulations and policies. It is also responsible for the supervision and administration of all the federal government's law enforcement agencies, courts and administrative agencies. This dual responsibility is a source of conflict in the Department. The conflict is often resolved by placing a high priority on the prevention of and investigation of crime, while allowing the other functions to operate in a manner that does not impede the prevention and investigation of crime.
The Department of Justice is not an enforcement agency. Its responsibilities are primarily concerned with the prevention and investigation of crime and the enforcement of laws and regulations. As the Department is primarily an administrative and regulatory agency, its responsibilities are largely limited to the implementation and enforcement of the laws and regulations. The Department does not have a role in the development and implementation of crime prevention strategies.
The Department is committed to the highest standards in the performance of its duties and the administration of the laws and regulations. These standards are set forth in the DOJ Standards, which are contained in the Administrative Manual, Chapter 41, Section 1204.3. The Department's enforcement responsibilities are defined by these standards and include the investigation and prosecution of criminal and regulatory violations and the supervision and enforcement of the laws and regulations. The standards also include a requirement that the Department establish a system for the periodic assessment and improvement of the performance of each program, project, office, and unit of the Department.
In order to assure consistency and to provide uniformity in the administration and enforcement of the laws and regulations, the standards must be interpreted and implemented. In cases where a particular interpretation or application is not clear or is not in accordance with the standards, the Director of the Office of the Director may consult the Director's Advisory Council. In cases where the interpretation or application is in accordance with the standards but appears unreasonable, the Director of the Office of the Director may refer the issue to the Office of the Attorney General for a review and recommendation.
