Alexander Roper lost his life in a car crash on September 23, 2017 at the age of 18. He was a recent graduate of Huntingtown High School and had started his career in Steamfitters Local 602 when the accident occurred.
He loved outlaw country music, hanging out with his family and friends, and FISHING!
Alex's legacy will always live on within our community. He stood out from many of his peers, however. Many Southern Maryland young people his age complain about the lack of 'fun opportunities' in the region, but Alex saw the abundant resources around him and spent as much time as he could in nature. He loved Calvert County and all the area had to offer. Hiking, fishing, bonfires, etc.
By starting this fishing tournament our hope is to use that legacy to do even more for others in need. Alex had a huge heart. He was a great friend and would give the shirt off his back to those who needed it. He also loved introducing others to the many natural treasures in Calvert County.
By providing an opportunity for others, especially youth, to do something Alex loved (Fishing) while dedicating the proceeds to local organizations is something that would make Alex smile. Furthermore, the non-profit foundation created in his honor strives to continue his mission year-round. The #DOITFORROPER foundation's mission is to introduce young people in our region and beyond to the local opportunities our beautiful region offers (and get them off those phones!). The funds we raise go to equipment for our outdoor activities (like a fishing scale for tournaments or supplies for park clean ups) and basic operating costs of hosting these events. We even hope to partner with DNR to start a fishing equipment rental program through the local libraries. The best part is that all donations and actions stay right here in Southern Maryland.
