FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dodgeball is a team sport in which players within two teams (6 players per side) are tasked to eliminate all the players on the opponents side by throwing dodgeball balls at the opposing players or catching the balls thrown at them. If a live ball hits the opponent, that player is considered out. The objective of each team is to eliminate all members of the opposing team by hitting them with thrown balls, catching a ball thrown by an opponent, or inducing an opponent to commit a violation, such as stepping outside the court. A point will be allocated to the team that was able to eliminate all the opposing team players. Within a given time duration, the team with the most amount of points wins the game.

Getting hit by a foam dodgeball? Nah. The hardest you'd probably feel is a slap on the face. Though, similar to any other sports, too much of anything will just cause injuries. So pre-workout stretching's and post-workout rehab is highly recommended especially if you have not done high intensity sports for a long period of time. Thus far, there have not been any record of serious life-threatening injuries to any player, although there are risks for minor injuries. 

At DBKCH, we implement practices and measures to avoid these incidents from occurring and in the unfortunate event they may occur, we have capable respondents with proper training to handle the situation.

In DBKCH, we play our dodgeball games both socially and competitively and are played in a more informal setting. Depending on how many players are joining the session, one match can take up to 15 to 18 minutes and will be rotating between a total of 4 to 6 teams.

Formally written in the WDBF guidelines though, matches will usually take up to 40 minutes and is split into two halves (20 minutes each). So expect this to happen if we ever have any competitions.

Team Rules

• A team may have a minimum of 6 players and no more than 12 players on the roster at the start of each match.

• 6 active players per team participate in a set. These 6 players must remain within the confined areas of the court, player out queue or penalty area.

• Any player from the team roster not active at the start of a set must remain within the substitution area.

• A Team may have up to 3 designated Ball Retrievers at the start of each set.

• Any player not active at the start of a set may be designated as a Ball Retriever.

• Ball Retrievers may enter any of the designated areas within the playing area other than the playing court to retrieve a ball up to the center line of their respective team’s side during a set.

• Ball Retrievers may only leave the playing area during a set to retrieve a ball(s).

A round-winner will be determined when:

I. A team has legally eliminated all of its opponents before the time elapses or;

II. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the round, the side with the greater number of players remaining on the court is deemed the winner.

III. The team to successfully win the most rounds first will win the match.

*** There will be a short break between each round.

Playing Area

• The Playing Area is a flat rectangular area that includes the playing court, free space, queue area, penalty area, and substitution area. It should be enclosed by barriers or netting on all four sides to prevent balls from exiting.

Dimensions

• The playing court is a rectangle with dimensions of 18 meters in length by 9 meters in width, surrounded by free space, which is a minimum of 1 meter wide on all sides. The space above the playing court must be free from any obstructions. This area shall be a minimum of 4 meters in height from the playing surface.

Playing Surface

• The surface must be flat and horizontal. It must not present any danger to any participants of a match. Dodgeball is not allowed to play on a rough or slippery surface.

Lines on the Court

• All lines are 5 cm wide. They must be of the same color, which is different from the color of the floor or any other lines. 

Boundary Lines

• The boundary lines consist of two side lines and two back lines that mark the playing court. Both side lines and end lines are drawn inside the dimensions of the playing court. In  Women’s competitions when using the Foam Playing Format, there shall be a back line whose rear edge is drawn 1 meter from the rear edge of the back lines.

Center Line 

• The axis of the center line divides the playing court into two equal courts. It shall extend 1 meter outside of the side lines.

Attack Line 

• On each court, an attack line is drawn, whose rear edge is 3 meters back from the axis of the center line.

Neutral Zone Line

• On each court, a neutral zone line, whose rear edge is drawn 2 meters back from the axis of the center line, marks the neutral zone.

Zones and Areas

i. Fair territory The fair territory is the area from the back line to, but not including, the neutral zone line on each court, enclosed by the side lines.

ii. Neutral zone The neutral zone is the area between, but not including, the two neutral zone lines on the playing court, enclosed by the side lines.

iii. Queue Area The queue area is an area of 5 meters in length and 1 meter in width, located 1 meter away from the side line of the court and its rear edge aligning with the rear edge of the back line. It is placed on the right-hand side of each court facing from the center line to the back line. It shall be marked with lines.

iv. Penalty Area The penalty area is 1 meter in length and width, extended from the queue towards the direction of the center line.
It shall be marked with lines.

v. Substitution Area The substitution area is located behind the queue area and penalty areas and extends to the end of the playing area. The sides shall be marked with lines by extending the lines of the queue area and the penalty area.

vi. Playing Area The playing area is the area enclosed by the boundary lines and includes each teams fair territory and the neutral zone.
