Combat is a encounter in which characters take turns attacking a target, be it an NPC, other Player (or PvP), or even a structure. Each character rolls for Initiative before combat, which is a D20 roll plus their Initiative modifier. The character with the highest roll goes first, then the second highest, and so on until the end of initiative is reached and the initiative starts over with the highest. Characters may enter or leave combat, but those who enter after initiative is rolled enter at the end of initiative.
While in combat, there are three phases during a character's turn: Action, Bonus Action, and Movement. These can be done in any order, and the character can also choose to skip any of these three on their turn. The Action phase is where players can cast a spell, attack a target, or do an activity which states it takes an action to do. Unless the character has a feature which states otherwise, characters can only do one Action per turn. The Bonus Action phase is a special type of Action that takes place at the same time as the Action phase, and can only be done once per turn. Movement allows characters to move up to their movement speed without using up their action. Characters can choose to use their Action to move as well, taking what is called the Dash Action. Combat is a great way to keep players engaged, especially in campaigns that utilize XP Leveling.Â
Roleplay is an encounter in which characters take turns engaging in either conversation or non-combat activity. Most of the time spent during rests (known as Downtime) is spent doing Roleplay. Roleplay is a great way to flesh out the world the campaign takes place in, and allows Players to fully engage with NPCs and the world itself.
