Through the past twenty five years of Desert Mountain’s existence, its Student Government has demonstrated a lack of progress, instead of working towards no real reform, the Student Government has been lacking accountability and has not properly represented the interests of the student body. Rather than using the trust and support given to them by the student body to represent the interests of their constituents, they instead allow budgets to balloon and negligence to run rampant. This Task Force is a final stand against those who ignore the interests of the student body, a bulwark for action and an advocate for student representation. The DMHS Task Force hopes to be a beacon of hope for students across the United States that wish to take a stand against the systemic pitfalls that plague their academic institutions. The Task Force seeks to counter those who allow the student body to remain toothless at a time where students lack proper nutrition, where security is fledgling and where no financial transparency exists in the Student Government, so that students are unaware of where their money is being spent. The Task Force is working to change the institutional issues of Desert Mountain and ensure that its student body is represented.
The DMHS Task Force’s origins started from the 2020 Constitution campaign; prior to the campaign, Desert Mountain never had a student constitution and it was decided that in order for Desert Mountain’s Student Government to more effectively operate, a student constitution was needed. A constitution was soon drafted and after a constitutional referendum, the Desert Mountain Student Government agreed to ratify a version of the document.
The necessity of a task force was preempted when, over the summer, the Student Government began spending excessive amounts of student funds for school events, even though more economical alternatives existed. Furthermore, the Student Government amended the Student Constitution to decree that any student senator that discloses the Student Government budget, would face impeachment and removal. Within hours of the Student Government doing this, a task force was convened to address the numerous institutional pitfalls that plague our school and Student Government. However, the Task Force’s goal is to work to bring about changes in our school, from fixing our Student Government to revamping our nutrition system, to even stopping club corruption. This Task Force is ultimately here to serve the students of Desert Mountain and ensure that together, we can bring about a better future for our school.
The Task Force was only made possible thanks to its volunteers who work to ensure the proper representation of the student body. If you would like to help us out, click here.
