COMPS: The Wire of the 1930s, the Boardwalk Empire or the Peaky Blinders of weed. It’s comparable to Narcos Mexico, which shows the history of marijuana criminal networks. The show becomes a conflict akin to Billions, a man of the government versus a man of the people.
SETTING: Reefer Madness walks us down the mean streets and into the hottest clubs of depression-era New Orleans. In contrast to the warm, colorful lifestyle of the Big Easy is the colder, bland government-issued decor of the FBN office with its bullpen and interrogation rooms.
We’ll also see the simple home lives of working men and women in New Orleans and Louisiana. The natural settings of the Louisiana swamp and ocean docks are perfect for smugglers to deal successfully. Meanwhile, the true seats of power are in the oak-panelled offices of Washington, D.C.
HOOK: What if getting the biggest opportunity of your life means you have to betray the people you love?
TESTIMONIES
Black Film & Screenplay Festival 2026
This is a very promising and gripping pilot with great potential, and it is absolutely something that one could find on a streaming platform one day. A lot of research clearly went into this, and the world is rich, grounded in strong characters (that are clearly understood so deeply), and full of suspense and tension in the best way. The setups for narrative threads give plenty of room to explore in future seasons, and the show has the feel of something that could expand in the way that Mindhunter did on Netflix. .
Palm Springs International Screenplay & Pitch Contest 2025
The premise of a Black federal agent navigating racial and moral conflicts during the Great Depression offers a fresh perspective on the War on Drugs, exploring a hidden chapter of history. The pitch creatively intertwines political ambition, racial struggles, and personal sacrifice, as seen through the protagonist Gary O'Neill’s journey. The setting of 1930s New Orleans is vividly captured, with the contrast between the lively streets, jazz clubs, and the stark government offices immersing the audience in the historical period. The series effectively draws comparisons to high-caliber crime dramas like "The Wire," "Boardwalk Empire," and "Narcos Mexico," placing the series in the context of gritty historical storytelling with criminal undertones.
BlueCat Screenwriting Competition 2024
"One of the script’s most notable merits lies in how realistically it establishes its setting, bringing the world of 1930s New Orleans to life through eloquent descriptors and stellar, vibrant dialogue. The script appears meticulously researched in how it approaches dialogue writing, with each character possessing particular verbal mannerisms and communicating in a way realistic to the times. As a result, the narrative effortlessly immerses the audience in its world."
GoldenScript Screenwriting Competition 2024
"There’s no doubt that Reefer Madness excels in its originality. This is acknowledged in the protagonist’s identity, the period in question, the attention to detail and minutia, and the context. Besides the statement that the script is inspired by history, it demonstrates enough unique elements to make it stand out from the rest."
BlueCat TV Pilot Competition 2024
"The Script evokes the era and the setting convincingly. It establishes O’Neill as a dedicated, diligent man attempting to make his way in the FBN; he’s haunted by the loss of his wife (presumably lost to opium, judging by the well-deployed dream sequence) and is attempting to reconnect with his daughter, Nova…despite his father Beau’s reluctance to let him get close again. The stroy bring out the competing pressures at play on him."
SlamDance Screenplay Competition 2024
"Great use of setting, and the combination of New Orleans and the Great Depression adds up to an enormous amount of conflict and inherent tension. O’Neill’s investigation is interesting, and we can see the story laying the groundwork for the trouble to come with a diverse cast full of personality."
Austin Film Festival 2024
"This script does very well to immerse the audience in that world, and by combining the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and the drug madness that swept the country post-prohibition, right before the start of the second world war, the script finds an arena ripe for a television series. The premise lights fire to simmering racial and legal tensions in the hot humid south. Within this world, there are bursts of creativity, twists and turns, unexpected connections and payoffs, with seedy characters on both sides of the law. Depending on the conflicts and bigger world at large within this arena, the series can last for several great seasons."
Santa Barbara International Screenplay Awards 2024
"Reefer Madness is a gripping and thought-provoking crime drama that masterfully weaves historical context with a richly textured narrative. The story tackles themes of race, power, and societal manipulation with boldness and authenticity, creating a timely and resonant piece. The protagonist, Agent Gary O’Neill, is a compelling figure whose personal struggles and professional conflicts anchor the narrative with emotional depth and complexity.
The tone is consistent and evocative, immersing the audience in the gritty, tension-filled world of 1930s America. The conflict—both external and internal—is compelling, creating high stakes that drive the story forward. The screenplay’s marketplace potential is significant, particularly in today’s landscape, where stories exploring historical injustices and underrepresented perspectives are highly sought after."
Barnstorm Fest Screenplay Competition 2024
"There is a professionalism to this screenplay that we really appreciate, showcasing a strong ear for colloquial dialogue. The Premise, Structure and Dialogue we would rate as a 9/10."
