The Des Moines County Master Gardeners, with 57 active members, is under the coordination of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach with support from the Department of Horticulture. Our mission is to use research-based horticulture and gardening knowledge and practices to educate people and coordinate projects that promote healthy communities.
With our funds and our labor, we support the Crapo Park Herb Garden, the Middletown Butterfly Garden, the Growing Together Donation Garden, and the South Hill Neighborhood Association Demonstration Garden.
Through the Growing Together project, we donate thousands of pounds of fresh, organically-grown produce to the Southeast Iowa Community Action food bank.
We offer horticultural education opportunities in the community.
Each year, we give a scholarship to an SCC student who is going into a horticultural field.
We support 4-H by providing awards for the top Gardening Project and winning Market Garden Basket at the Des Moines Fair. We also donate time to serve as gardening department judges at the fair.
We host an educational booth at the Jefferson Street Farmers’ Market, providing free samples, information, recipes, seeds, etc.
