ASSIGNMENTS:

1. Create and document personal "Lumia" performance to song of choice
   • ~3-5 minutes TRT (total running time)
   • Convert to 1080p, HAP with audio. Upload to WEEK 1 - INTRO / LUMIA on the Google Drive
2. Review Live A/V Trajectories
   • Email a one paragraph description of your favorite, and why it resonates.

WEEK 2 - FEBRUARY 6

CLASS PRESENTATION: Personal Lumia

Technology module: Compression (spatial and temporal). Intro to GitHub. Installing Max, Live coding exercise on building a "video jukebox," remixing class Lumia

ASSIGNMENTS:

1. Refine personal "Lumia" remixer using Max
2. Review Live A/V Trajectories

WEEK 3 - FEBRUARY 13

CLASS PRESENTATION: Present "Lumia" remixers using Max

LECTURE: Synaesthetics (Visual Music)

DEMO: Translating vision to sound using GarageBand (visual multi-tracking with MIDI)

ASSIGNMENT: VISUAL MUSIC (Synaesthetics) PART ONE AND TWO: Sound Meditation and Notation

1. Sound Meditation Transcription
2. Illustrated Soundscape (aka Graphic Notation)

WEEK 4 - FEBRUARY 20

CLASS PRESENTATION: Sound Meditation Transcription and Illustrated Soundscape (aka Graphic Notation)

Technology module: Simple sequencer built in Max, using audio tones, shapes, abstract video, color, etcetera.

ASSIGNMENT: VISUAL MUSIC: PART THREE (AUDIO): A corresponding, ~30 second audio score based on Soundscape (Graphic Notation), using GarageBand or audio software of your choice.

WEEK 5 - FEBRUARY 27

CLASS PRESENTATION: Present 30 second score based on Graphic Notation (upload via Google Drive)

Technology module: Translating sound to vision using visual tools in MaxMSP/Jitter.

ASSIGNMENT: Continue your VISUAL MUSIC's audio/visual patch using Max. Update your patches via Git.

WEEK 6 - MARCH 5

VISITING ARTIST - JOSHUE OTT, aka SUPERDRAW

Technology module: Continue translating sound to vision using MaxMSP/Jitter.

ASSIGNMENT: Finalize your VISUAL MUSIC's audio/visual piece using Max. Push your final patches to the Git.

WEEK 7 - MARCH 12

STUDENT PRESENTATIONS: Present final VISUAL MUSIC patches to the class. Party!

IN-CLASS: Final project hopes and dreams.

SPRING BREAK ASSIGNMENT: Prepare ~3-5 minute performance proposal with overall concept, mood boards, reference media, drawings, etcetera. Co-Vid Challenge: How do we perform without a physical audience? What does live performance look like in a pandemic?

WEEK 8 - MARCH 19

NO CLASSES -- SPRING RECESS

WEEK 9 - MARCH 26

STUDENT PRESENTATIONS: Performance proposals. Discuss.

DJ KEYNOTE: CandyStations Case Studies

ASSIGNMENT: Revise proposals for final presentation to the class on April 9. Should include reference mockups, storyboards, pre-visualizations, tech specs, collaborators (?), and so on.

WEEK 10 - APRIL 2

GUEST ARTIST: Toni Dove.

IN-CLASS: Discuss progress/collaborations if applicable. Brainstorm performance theme/title based on commonalities, "venue," etcetera.

ASSIGNMENT: Finalize final presentations to the class. Must include tech specs/schematics, mock ups, pre-vis, storyboards, etcetera.

WEEK 10 - APRIL 9

PRESENT IN CLASS: FINAL BADASS PERFORMANCE PROPOSALS!

IN-CLASS: Discuss, give feedback/notes

ASSIGNMENT: PREPARE TO PRESENT 5 MINUTE DEMOS

WEEK 11 - APRIL 16

PRESENT IN CLASS: IN PROGRESS DEMOS

IN-CLASS: Discuss, give feedback/notes. Finalize title/themes. Brainstorm show order, etcetera.
