Mizoram University (MZU) was established by an Act of Parliament (No. 8 of 2000), became operational on 2 July, 2001, and is located in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, spanning 978.1988 acres on the city’s outskirts. Before Mizoram University was established, the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), headquartered in Shillong, operated a campus in Mizoram. Over its last 25 years, MZU has made considerable progress in infrastructure, academic programs, manpower, and support services. Mizoram University is NAAC-accredited with an ‘A+’ Grade (2025), ISO-certified (2018), and consistently ranked among India’s Top 100 Universities by NIRF (2016–2024). Presently, Mizoram University has 39 active academic departments offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs organized under 10 Schools of Study. It includes 40 affiliated colleges and one constituent college. Mizoram University is about a half-hour drive from the heart of Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. Mizoram University is well connected by air to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Imphal and Silchar; by road to Silchar, Guwahati, Shillong and other major cities; and has its nearest railhead at Sairang, Aizawl.
The Department of Library and Information Science was established on 20 August 2002 and was formally inaugurated by Prof. A.K. Sharma, the then Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Mizoram University. The Department’s mission is to provide quality education that equips students to compete effectively in both national and international job markets. It aims to deliver relevant, meaningful instruction to meet the evolving demands of libraries, while also cultivating the skills and competencies students need to become valuable assets to the profession. The department envisions ensuring the free flow of information and equitable access for all communities in the region, rooted in the principle of developing a knowledge-based society. It is committed to excellence in service, aligning its efforts with the objectives of college and university libraries and supporting lifelong learning. The vision further aspires to build a sustainable, future-ready educational framework that responds to dynamic societal needs, nurtures leadership in library management, and promotes innovation and research. The Department currently offers a two-year integrated MLIS (NEP-aligned) program and Ph.D. research opportunities. Facilities include an independent building, a modern State-of-the-Art ICT Laboratory, a Wi-Fi-Enabled campus, a dedicated departmental library, and a team of eight experienced permanent teaching staff.
The National Institute of Technology Mizoram (NIT Mizoram) is an Institute of National Importance (INI) under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, established in 2009 as one of the new NITs created to strengthen India’s national system of excellence in technical education and research. Governed by the NITSER Act, 2012, the Institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across Engineering, Sciences, and Humanities & Social Sciences, contributing to the nation’s priorities in quality education, research, innovation, and technological advancement. Located in Aizawl, NIT Mizoram is supported by its Central Library, established in 2011, which provides technology-enabled academic and research services through a strong hybrid collection, RFID infrastructure, Koha, Knimbus Digital Library, and participation in the ONOS programme of INFLIBNET.
The Central Library, as one of the integral parts of the institute , was established in 2011, with an aim to provide adequate support for to the academic and research community of the institute. The Central library, presently located at the institute Block 7, Chaltlang, has a strengthened hybrid collection of resources including the major document types i.e. physical and e-books, e-journals, theses, newspapers and other reference sources. The Central Library is fully RFID enabled ensuring seamless access and transactions across the resources and the services. The library management system is fine-tuned with the Open source LMS -Koha, Knimbus Digital Library space. The Central Library, NIT Mizoram is also a member of the ONOS Programme of the INFLIBNET.
