Chapter Projects

Raising Readers in Story County Project

Members of our chapter have been involved with Raising Readers for many years.  Our contributions as a chapter have centered on purchasing books to donate or making monetary donations to purchase books.  We have supported Raising Readers with volunteering hours to various projects. Raising Readers in Story County developed from an Iowa Stories 2000 project. Christie Vilsack initiated Iowa Stories 2000, and Ames was selected as one of 7 pilot communities.  Community involvement was a key element of the initiative. In Ames the project team was headed by librarians from school, public, and university libraries. The advisory panel included representatives from a number of organizations. A series of focus groups and public forums discussed existing literacy programs and what segments of the community were under-served. Early Literacy emerged as the area of greatest need and young children and their parents, especially families with low-incomes, became the target group for the Ames project.

World Fellowship

World Fellowship in an international yearly project, and our chapter collects money twice a year that are sent to International DKG.  World Fellowship provides scholarships for women who are pursuing educational opportunities.

This year we are also supporting our state of Iowa World Fellowship recipients with gift cards and communication to support their studies.
