A Virtual Gallery Celebrating the Work of Artists with Disabilities
There is a lack of equal opportunities and accessibility to artists with disabilities which leads to low visibility in the community, and lack of representation.
This project will provide an opportunity for diverse artists to show their work in a safe space where they will have the attention of the community, and to shine a spotlight on work that may have previously been overlooked.
_______________
A lot of energy has gone towards diversity and inclusion initiatives, and there have been monumental steps towards legislation for protected classes, but there is still a long way to go in changing societal bias. One person can’t change years of prejudice, but finding ways to begin changing the narrative, and creating space to celebrate differences rather than look down on them are great places for anyone to start. This project is not a legislative initiative, or looking to make any big needle shifts, but rather to take a moment to give differently abled artists their space to shine. In addition, this can serve as an opportunity to educate those who consider themselves traditionally abled to be more open minded to those they perceive as different.
