Remember this;
"Early takeoff results in a shorter stride and more vertical displacement of the centre of mass, creating a less efficient stride and a less efficient running style than later takeoff (see Herb below), which enhances stride length and lessens vertical displacement."

This first series is by Lyle McDonald. A very clear discussion on Endurance Training. A bit long but a great read.

Below is a link/quotation to a scientific study on steady state and interval training - good read
I am convinced that our focus must be on longer bouts of exercise as the foundation of our training program. This is easily understood by you marathoners, but may be surprising news to you 1000 meter rowers, middle distance runners and, pursuit cyclists.

(Had two great, now dead, links to great articles on John Walker. Below is a basic summary)
Arch Jelly would usually have Walker doing 8-10 wks conditioning of long runs. This would consist of 140 km up to 175 km per week and include long runs of 1.5 hours and 2 hours. Arch wanted Walker to keep his mileage up whilst in his track and race phases. Walker would then run:
-125km per week in another Conditioning phase
-135km pw whilst in Track work
-70km pw whilst in Race phase
