In 2021 Hong Kong will see its fourth resort- The Hungry Ghost Hotel!
We all know the story of the Haunted Mansion. The Ghost Host has a home with 999 spirits, but has room for one more. This is timeless attraction is loved by people all over the world, but Hong Kong is one of few parks where the story-line remains entirely absent.
With the addition of an entire theme park dedicated to the "dark side", Hong Kong is in the perfect position for the Ghost Host. The problem: Mystic Manor. The answer: an adaption of the classic that tries to make it even more immersive. In other words... making the Haunted Mansion not a ride, but a hotel.
The Gothic Building instantly sets it apart from the Coronado Disneyland Hotel, African Explorer's Hotel, and Art Deco Hollywood Hotel. The largest hotel at 999 rooms, the Hungry Ghost Hotel is more than just a place to stay... it is an experience.
The story has been modified slightly to suit Chinese Culture. The Hungry Ghost Festival is a special time on the Chinese Calendar, when the spirits arrive. Many of these spirits are evil beings; yet we can calm our loved ones by providing them food.
The Hungry Ghosts are staying at this hotel for the festival, and they are now welcoming non-ghostly guests. But there is so much food in the hotel all the ghosts have become happy!
When guests walk into the resort, they will be checked in and then directed towards a special elevator. This elevator works just like the others, expect it is built to "welcome" the guests. The Ghost Host delivers his formal speech.
Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Hungry Ghost Hotel. I am your host, your ghost host. Now...
While the scene plays out the elevator has been moving, to the floor guests are staying at. Even the hallways are strange. Portraits are secretly animated, and as you walk will change expressions. The chandeliers randomly start moving. But the hotel makes a large effort to remind everyone these are friendly ghosts, and they will not harm you.
There are all sorts of cool quirks to the hotel. For example, the Grand Ballroom is known for having... a less than traditional menu.
And the giant hedge maze is a real delight- expect for at night, when it becomes a spooky maze with costumed ghouls. Can you escape?
And every Thursday and Sunday, the Headless Houdini preforms his magic in front of a live audience. Who knows what he will do next. This show is then broadcasted to the other resorts's TVs.
After the opening of Disney's Dark Kingdom, the Hungry Ghost Hotel will open an additional pathway to connect it directly to the park. The hotel takes us straight to Black Bayou at the very back of the park. This is a must-do for those who want an easy access into the dark kingdom.
