#DismantleNOMA - THE NEW NOW
In the present day context of a global pandemic, national and international social and political unrest (think BLM and #EndSARS, think attempted coup d’etat), local and regional climate crisis, displacement, and gentrification, #DismantleNOMA is producing an exhibition that will be on view in Fall 2021 through Winter 2022.
Featuring New Orleans and Louisiana-based artists of color, The New Now is both an art exhibition and an art intervention that highlights the resilience and survival strategies that sustain communities through times of crisis, disaster, and pandemic. The New Now celebrates the pleasures, labors, and visions that bring into being the city that participating artists would like to see.
The #DismantleNOMA Collective invites New Orleans and Louisiana-based artists of color to participate. We are accepting submissions of recent work including digital art to be projected onto building facades and other public spaces, in addition to 2D or 3D work.
Works created prior to 2018 will not be selected. Some questions that your work might address:
- What makes you/us feel safe/powerful/whole?
- What (and who) is a culture bearer?
- What are the spaces/places/practices/values that are sustaining your/our creativity?
- How do you/we heal from injustice, violence and/or intergenerational trauma?
- What do you/we focus on sustaining now and in the future?
- Describe a day in the life of an artist or culture bearer in an ideal world?
- What do you/we need right now to make more/better art?
- If you had access to unlimited resources and could leave behind one legacy project what would it be?
Additionally, we are commissioning a total of 5 original artworks that will be printed and distributed at a variety of spaces throughout the city:
- A map of New Orleans that includes dynamic arts spaces that are led by people of color
- 4 posters to be posted around the city (visual dialogue with the people of New Orleans)
Submission
You will need a Submittable user account to submit your application materials. Click on the button at the bottom of the page to access your Submittable account.
- ART Submissions must include an artist photo, short bio, high-resolution photo(s) of your artwork (5-7 images), and a description - including the title, size, medium, and the year the artwork was created. Artwork created before 2018 should not be submitted for consideration.
- SHORT FILM Submissions must include your short bio, a synopsis of your film, and a web link to preview the film. Films created before 2018 should not be submitted for consideration.
