United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with Swiss Agency of Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), implemented a project on 'strengthening state strategies for climate actions' to integrate climate actions into sub-national planning with the aim of benefiting local communities in India. As part of this larger project, our team at University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) was assigned with the task of developing a clean energy roadmap for the state of Uttarakhand. Towards this aim, we carried out a situational analysis of the existing power scenario in Uttarakhand and studied the various measures being adopted to increase deployment of renewable energy. We performed the electricity demand forecasting for next five years and set up annual targets for renewable energy generation that were in line with the national and state vision. To meet these targets, we prepared four different renewable energy pathways along with a cost-benefit analysis based on the energy cost, installation costs and GHG emissions.
