The History of Hujan Angin Temple, Banjar Buading, Kaba-Kaba
The village of Kaba-Kaba was founded in 1343 by a Majapahit noble named Sira Arya Blog, who came to Bali during the Majapahit expansion led by the prime minister Gajah Mada. After establishing the Kingdom of Kaba-Kaba, leadership continued through his descendants. In 1386, his grandson Sira Arya Anglurah Kabakaba Teges built several temples to spiritually protect the kingdom, including Pura Hujan Angin, located southeast of the royal palace. The temple was named after a remarkable event during a meditation ritual, when heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning suddenly appeared, which was believed to be a divine blessing for its establishment. Today, the temple is considered a Dang Kahyangan temple because it houses a shrine dedicated to the revered Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha.
As the entrance to a story of divine intervention and nature’s raw power, the shrine of Ratu Gede Ujan Angin stands as a living testament to a miraculous moment in the kingdom's history. Its origins trace back to the reign of the Third King of Kaba-Kaba, during a time when the heavens spoke directly to the earthly ruler through a profound apocalypse. In a vision sent by the gods, the King was commanded to plant the Taru Sakti, a sacred tree of mystery characterized by its unique three leaves emerging from a single stem. Following the divine map laid out in his revelation, the King sought the exact spot where the heavens met the earth. Once the tree took root, the skies opened in a display of immense power, bringing forth the heavy rains that would nourish and protect the land. This shrine was built upon that very ground as an eternal tribute to the gods of the wind and rain. To stand before Ratu Gede Ujan Angin is to acknowledge the sacred dialogue between a King and his creators, honoring the life-giving storms that were summoned by a single, holy plant.
In the architecture of Balinese faith, the Rong Telu (The Three Compartments) serves as the sacred heart of the family or temple shrine. It is a physical manifestation of the belief that the universe and everything within it exists in a cycle of birth, life, and return. At Pura Luhur Ujan Angin, the Rong Telu breathes with a specific and powerful lineage. Here, the three chambers are the residences of three divine siblings : Ida Ratu Nyoman Sakti, Ida Ratu Dwayu Mas Manik, and Ida Ratu Dwayu Manik Mirah. These three deities are the children of the Great Mother who dwells at Pura Luhur Batu Ngaus. In a broader sense, Pura Luhur Batu Ngaus is a magnificent coastal temple perched upon a dark, volcanic rock formation that braves the crashing waves. As a Dang Kahyangan temple, it is a site of universal importance, revered as a spiritual guardian that protects the island from the power of the sea.
This intersection marks a divine journey of transition. It occurs when the deities who permanently reside within the coastal sanctuary of Luhur Dalem Sakenan Temple, travel to be seated or “dilinggihkan” within the hallowed grounds of Pura Luhur Ujan Angin, accompanied by the children and grandchildren, most notably the revered Ida Ratu Dwayu Mas and Ida Bhatari Durga. Even as they dwell within a different shrine, their purpose and protective power remain identical. Pura Luhur Ujan Angin becomes a temporary home that mirrors the sanctity of their origin, proving that divine grace is not bound by a single location. It is a Dynamic Manifestation of faith, a bridge where different sacred spaces unite to serve the same spiritual function, ensuring that the blessings of the ancestors continue to flow uninterrupted over the land and its people.
This shrine represents a spiritual bridge to the ancient territory of Kapal. It is known as a "Persimpangan" (Intersection) because it serves as the dedicated residence for the spirit of Ida Ratu Lingsir when the divine presence travels from his ancestral seat in Kapal to stay within these sacred grounds. When the deity is seated here, the authority and blessings of the Kapal lineage are brought directly into the heart of this sanctuary. Though the physical distance between the two places remains, the spiritual essence is unified. To stand before this shrine is to witness a Divine Diplomacy, where the sacred energy of Kapal is honored and "stayed" here to provide protection, wisdom, and a sense of shared heritage, ensuring that the ancient bonds between these two holy sites remain vibrant and eternally connected.
This shrine serves as a sacred "intersection" for the deities who journey from the ancient sanctuary of Pura Luhur Gede Dalem Buwit. It is a place of shared presence, where Ida Ratu resides alongside Ida Bhatari in a unified spiritual bond. When they are seated here, the deep, protective energy of the Dalem Buwit lineage which often associated with the mysteries of the underworld and the preservation of the soul is brought forward into this space. It signifies that the authority and blessings of the Great Temple of Buwit are not confined to its original to witness a Sacred Partnership, where the masculine and feminine divine forces of Buwit remain eternally connected, ensuring that their combined strength continues to nourish and protect all who seek their guidance at this holy crossing.
This shrine serves as a dedicated "intersection" for the divine presence traveling from the legendary Pura Luhur Batukaru. In the general heart of Balinese faith, Pura Luhur Batukaru is one of the island's most vital pillars of protection, one of the nine Kayangan Jagat (Directional Temples). Nestled on the slopes of the second-highest volcano, it is a mist-shrouded sanctuary surrounded by ancient rainforests, revered as the spiritual guardian of the West and the protector of the island's water and fertility. When Ida Gusti Nyoman Lingsir Delod Segara journeys from those sacred mountain heights to be seated or dilinggihkan within this shrine, he brings the cool, protective energy of Batukaru down to the plains. The name "Delod Segara" hints at a profound union, suggesting a connection that reaches even toward the sea, creating a complete cycle of spiritual flow.
In the spiritual tapestry of our sanctuary, the shrine of Ida Ratu Gede Pemuteran Jagat stands as a profound Vortex of Cosmic Balance, a place where the scattered energies of the world are gathered and restored to harmony. The name "Pemuteran Jagat" carries a powerful narrative weight, translating to the "Turning of the Universe." This shrine serves as a sacred intersection for the divine force that oversees the movement and equilibrium of the world. It is the spiritual axis where chaos is transformed into order. When this divine presence is seated or dilinggihkan within this shrine, it acts as a celestial regulator, ensuring that the natural and spiritual cycles of the kingdom remain in perfect synchronization.
