Midsummer

Midusummer eve is a sweden custom and a festival wich is usually celebrated a saturday between the nineteen and the twenty-five june, . For exemple this year it is going to be the satuday twenty-four june. Every years it changes because the festival needs to be celebrated in the middle of Summer because it's the moment of the summer soltice.

So what do swedish people in this festival ? The day before Midsummer almost everybody in the country goes to the countryside and the towns are desert. So if you are a tourist and you go in Sweden during the end of june, don't be amazed if nobody is in the cities : they are probably planning their celebration.

Once all the family is together , they start celebrating. At first, everybody eats a picnic. Then some people with traditional dresses begin  a dance around a maypole (they called this pole "Midsommarstången"). The whole celebration is very joyfull.

An intresting thing to know is that Sweden as the USA is a country which imports a lot of music.

The most famous swedish band is ABBA.

                       EASTER IN SWEDEN

It is celebrated during April

When you open your house door and you find Swedish kids standing on your door mat, dressed like witches, don't feel confused it's already Halloween. No, it's påsk, easter in Sweden. Those little witches are also for candy hunt though. So be prepared to have some charges of candy in stock to preserve your home from witchcraft.

While in other countries Easter is specifically a religious holiday, it has become a secular one in Sweden. The Swedes are well down in the statistics when it comes to church visits per year, and even if Easter swells the numbers slightly, most people celebrate it at home with their families and relatives.

FUN FACT:

A Swedish woman called Eva Ekeblad invented vodka made from potatoes

Before that, vodka was only made from grains. Her creation is called brännvin in Swedish, and it’s still a favorite tipple on national holidays. Ekeblad’s recipe was copied into the royal journals and published on 5 November 1748.

The Lucia

The annual candlelit Lucia procession on 13 December is perhaps one of the more famous Swedish customs, with girls and boys clad in white full-length gowns singing songs together.

Tradition has it that Lucia is to wear ‘light in her hair’, which in practice means a crown of electric candles in a wreath on her head. Each of her handmaidens carries a candle, too. Parents gather in the dark with their mobile cameras at the ready.

The Lucia tradition can be traced back both to the martyr St Lucia of Syracuse (died in 304) and to the Swedish legend of Lucia as Adam’s first wife. It is said that she consorted with the Devil and that her children were invisible infernals. The name may be associated with light

Fun facts

McDonald's can now be found almost anywhere in the world. Even though the Swedes are not known for being obese or unhealthy, Sweden has the highest number of McDonald's restaurants per capita across Europe.
