Civil Engineers are engineers that deals with and oversee the design, construction, and maintenance of environmental and public works such as waste and water systems, bridges, airports, etc. that benefit the majority.
Building science is the collection of science that focuses on the effects of the physical environment on buildings. Building science also focuses on designing and building resourcefully with consideration of the future and sustainable design.
Bridge Designer
I started off with using all hollowed tubes to build the bridge. Then I ran the simulation to find out which parts were weak and needed to be improved. After replacing all the weak hollowed tubes with solid tubes, I ended up with this design.
We started off by building just the base plate, the part that the cart would run on. We then attached the pillars, to ensure that they had a steady hold before we ran out of glue. Finally, we assembled first, and then glued on, the triangle supports, with 9 of them arranged in a cuboid so that they would be stronger.
We were tasked with designing a 3d model of our neighboring group, group 4's, bridge. They first had given us several images in the program ModelSmart3D, and then we had to interpret those images and build a to-scale model in TinkerCad. We then sent the file to Polar3D to 3D print, so that we had a prototype to see what would go wrong.
This image shows the 3D printed model of our bridge design. In this design, there happens to be a lot more trusses, which was our original design. However, we decided to reduce the number of trusses so that we could have thicker members instead of more trusses. However, for our final design, we still chose to use the warren truss bridge design.
In order to calculate how much stress each joint undertook, we designed the bridge in ModelSmart3D, so that we could test where everything worked.
