The goals of our organization are as follows:
Form a community of disabled students in STEM
Make new friends and find collective support
Host events around disability (e.g., film screenings, book clubs) and lower-stakes gatherings where we can talk about our place in STEM, body double, etc.
Share experiences
Advocate for improved access + acceptance on campus
DIScE is committed to fostering an environment that welcomes individuals of all identities, backgrounds, and experiences. We aim to provide an inclusive and supportive community where undergraduates and graduate students can connect, share their stories, and build lasting friendships. We believe in the power of collective support and aim to create a platform where everyone feels heard, valued, and respected. We are founded upon the principles of disability justice (https://www.sinsinvalid.org/blog/10-principles-of-disability-justice) and intersectionality and will work together to actively work against ableist, racist, colonial, and other oppressive systems within academia and broader society. Anyone is welcome regardless of race, gender identity, sexual identity, and disability, and while we celebrate different experiences and opinions, no hate speech or harassment will be tolerated within our group. We encourage open communication, empathy, and understanding as we work together to co-create an interdependent space that uplifts and supports everyone.
DIScE stems from discussions we've had in the Misfit Lab within the Computational Media department at UCSC. We'd love to have you join us! Please fill out the interest form to be added to our Discord server: https://forms.gle/cmpXhNmmZSBT82gd9
