Types of Sources
Encyclopedia
An encyclopedia is a book or set of books that contains short articles that teach you about many different things (people, places, events, animals, plants, etc).
General encyclopedias contain some information about just about everything
Special/subject encyclopedias contain more in-depth information about a single topic or concept (for example: we have an encyclopedia in the library that only has biographies of scientists!)
Dictionary
A book that tells you what words mean, how to spell them, and how to pronounce them.
Dictionaries also contain information about the source of a word!
Thesaurus
A book that tells you words that mean the same thing to another word, also known as synonyms.
Thesauri also sometimes tell you words that mean the opposite of another word, also known as antonyms.
Atlas
A book of maps. Can be a world atlas (which shows the whole world or a regional atlas (which shows a certain part of the world).
Print atlases often include data, charts, and graphs about the area on the map.
