Take advantage now! Until the end of the 31st of Decembre 2026, or until the funds end.
Utilizing the same system for academic trips:
Make sure that the travel mode you chose for your mission is sustainable: a train, bus, or car sharing.
Only round-trips to the location of the academic mission can be reimbursed (both trips need to be sustainable). Transfers during the mission (e.g., bus, metro, taxi) are not reimbursable via this fund.
Add "(sostenibilità)" next to the destination when logging the trip for reimbursement.
3. In the mission authorization, when getting other expenditures reimbursed, indicate personal or internal funds (NOT funds of projects with reporting -progetti a rendicontazione-)
4.E-mail andrea.bizzego@unitn.it, or martina.vacondio@unitn.it the sentence below, replacing "XXX" with the total estimated amount of costs incurred through sustainable means:
"I plan to go on a mission where I will use funds dedicated to sustainable mobility for an estimated total of XXX EUR."
And done!
Finally, we would like to remind you that only when the mission liquidation has been sent can it be verified that the trip was actually carried out in a sustainable manner, on the basis of the travel expenses entered.
For any doubts or further inquiries reach martina.vacondio@unitn.it, or andrea.bizzego@unitn.it.
In 2026, travel expenses related to sustainable transportation will be charged to the Sustainable Mobility Fund (€7,000 cap). This fund aims to:
Encourage the choice of sustainable transportation.
Increase awareness and concern about the issue.
...and moreover: make sustainability not a problem, but an advantage for researchers.
There are currently two major changes in the world stage:
Reaching the Sustainable Development Goals and climate change which constricts us to make more sustainable choices, both at local and global levels. What is local, then becomes global.
The growing importance and momentum towards sustainability in the university, both in Italy, in Europe and the world. This current project, and what we learn from it, will help us with future projects in the university.
And in the university, a large part of the emissions come from academic travel, making it a central topic in sustainability.
There are various ways of making a university more sustainable. Already, there are projects across the universities of the world of improving city infrastructure, as well as offering discounts or subscriptions to university students and personnel. However projects focused on university personnel are not as wide-spread. Some examples include:
The University of Copenhagen, the Department of Organization, where they removed reimbursements for flights, and enforced sustainable planning of academic travel for the first time, effectively trailblazing this mode of sustainable travel (Source, IOA Sustainability Policies 2019. -Webpage has been changed and currently under work-).
The University of Groningen, where they similarly plan academic travel favoring train travel over airlines for travel under 800 km (Source).
The University of Lund, the current (2025) number one ranked university in sustainability, where they prefer more sustainable options with less emissions, finding the best solutions via collaborations with hired travel agencies for researchers in terms of cost and environmental impact (Source 1, Source 2).
We want to consider and leverage this opportunity as a pilot project. In the current global context, universities will be increasingly challenged to become more sustainable and reduce emissions. Our goal is to best prepare our university for these needs. Therefore, with the results achieved by 2026, we may have the opportunity to use this experience as a precedent for other projects: both for a broader sustainable mobility project and to explore other avenues for improving sustainability. Therefore, we plan for all of this to both have an immediate and a lasting impact.
