Tyrannosaurus rex, or "T-rex" for short, is one of the most famous and terrifying dinosaurs we know about. Its name means "tyrant lizard king." A tyrant is a horrible leader, and the T-rex was surely a terrible beast to run into!
With its huge head and powerful jaws, it was most likely an apex predator, which means that it was at the top of the food chain and no other animals preyed on it. But some people think that instead of being a hunter it might have been a scavenger, which means that it would look for animals that were already dead.
In either case, T-rex was one giant carnivore! T-rex could be 40 feet long and 12 feet tall, and weigh up to 20,000 pounds! That's about twice as large as an elephant! It had a massive tail to help it support its head and to stand up and walk on its two rear legs.
It lived in a time about 70 to 140 million years ago which was called the Cretaceous Period. Some other dinosaurs that lived at the same time were triceratops, ankylosaurus, and hadrosaurs. Pteranodons are not dinosaurs, but lived alongside with them during the Cretaceous Period.
You would surely feel fearful if you came across this enormous beast in the wild!
