Biography

I am Associate Professor in multimodal AI at Queen Mary University of London, UK. I serve as consultant, academic advisor and/or scientific collaborator to multiple companies (e.g. Toyota Motor Europe, Hume AI, GRNET, WPP, Remark AI). I am Responsible AI Mentor for Digital Catapult's High Growth AI Accelerator (Innovate UK BridgeAI programme). I am Mentor in IEEE UK & Ireland's Women in Engineering (WIE) Connect Mentorship Programme. I am Fellow of Higher Education Academy, holder of Post-Graduate Certificate, IEEE member, BMVA member, AAAI member, ACM member and IARP associate member.

I have been: (i) Associate Professor in AI at University of Greenwich; (ii) Research Scientist at Deep Render (image/video compression); (iii) Consultant at FaceSoft (affect recognition/generation) & Cogitat (decoding people’s music-listening brain states); and (iv) scientific collaborator to various companies (e.g. Realeyes).

I obtained the PhD from Imperial College London (ICL), being member of iBUG group and recipient of ICL's prestigious Teaching Fellowship. I received the MSc from ICL and the UG & MSc from National Technical University of Athens.

Research

My research and interests span the areas of multimodal (image/video, audio, text, time series, sensors) machine and deep learning, trustworthy (fair, responsible, explainable and ethical) AI, computer vision, neuro-symbolic AI, causal learning, physics-informed machine and deep learning, affective computing, behavior understanding analysis & generation, digital humans, human machine interaction, medical imaging, mental health, healthcare.

I have co-authored 80+ publications in the top journals and conferences, such as IJCV, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, AAAI, TAFFC, ACM MM, ECAI and Neurocomputing. I am inventor of 'Facial Behaviour Analysis' (2021) patent (Huawei). I have h-index 39, with 6100+ citations. For a complete list of my publications check my google scholar.

My research has been funded and used by many top international companies. I was awarded the 'Sullivan Thesis Prize' by British Machine Vision Association & Society for Pattern Recognition (BMVA) at BMVC 2023, a Prize for UK researchers, based on their Thesis’ originality, academic and industrial impact, breadth & depth. I am listed in the most recent edition (for 2024) of the Stanford-Elsevier ranking of the World’s Top 2% Scientists, ranking: i) 21,554 out of 236,313 Top Scientists (among all disciplines & fields); ii) 991 out of 458,615 Top Scientists in AI/ & Image Processing.

I have been: i) General Chair of ABAW series of Workshops & Competitions in CVPR 2022 - 2025, ECCV 2022 - 2024, ICCV 2021 & 2025, FG 2020; ii) co-Organizer & Chair of DEF-MIA-COV19D series of Competitions & Workshops in CVPR 2024, ICASSP 2023, ECCV 2022, ICCV 2021; iii) co-Organizer of MRAC & REACT Workshops in ACM MM 2024 & 2023, as well as of PHAROS-AFE-AIMI Workshop & Competition at ICCV 2025 and of HRAI Workshop at ICMI 2025; iv) Co-organizer of Deepfakes Detection Grand Challenge at ACM MM 2024.

I am Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing, topical advisory member of Electronics and Area Chair of BMVC and IEEE FG. I serve as program committee member and reviewer for top-tier conferences and journals in my fields, including CVPR, TPAMI, Nature, NeurIPS, ECCV, AAAI, ICCV, ICML, TIP, TNNL and ECAI. I evaluate grant proposals for prestigious organizations such as Peer Review College, EPSRC, MRC, NIHR, iUK, BridgeAI, EU Commission, NSERC, QNRF, ISF.

My work has been featured in the Platelet Magazine (the official journal of the ITP Support Association), in the Best Of ECCV 2022 (by ECCV and RSIP Vision), in Digital Catapult and in Best of ICCV 2025 (part of the Voxel51 AI, ML & Computer Vision Meetup series).
