September 2026 Committee Report
The 34% Rate Hike Deadlock: In September 2026, the School Employees' Health Benefits Commission (SEHBC) deadlocked for the third consecutive meeting over a proposed 34% average rate increase (up to 39% in some districts) for 2027 health insurance premiums. All four labor representatives refused to approve the increase.
Legislative Push: While New Jersey froze premium increases for state workers, that freeze did not apply to school employees. The NJEA is actively lobbying for Bill S4438, which aims to control healthcare costs by addressing supply-side inflation rather than passing costs onto educators.
The NJEA is advocating heavily to roll back the multi-tiered pension system established under former Governor Chris Christie. We continue to push for reforms that grant newer hires the same robust benefits as those hired before 2007 to make the profession more attractive. Stay tuned for updates.
The signatures collected last year for “Tier 1 for Everyone” were part of more than 112,000 signatures delivered directly to state leadership. The Tier 1 bills did not receive final action before the legislative session ended, so new legislation must now be introduced in the current session. NJEA has said the campaign will continue, but there is not currently a new member action posted.
