When Thomas (Tommy) M. Davis' father told him not to get into what he was into -- a corporate engineering position with 3M -- he said something to the effect that he would not enjoy the "rat race." Tommy took him at his word.

He promptly began a series of jobs that would ultimately give him the experience and know-how to land some of the most challenging positions in the construction industry.

At the age of 14, he began working at a Marina. One of his jobs was putting boats in the water for regular customers. For this he used a Jeep with a trailer hitch on the front -- instead of the back. He said he thought this was a clever idea -- just one of many that he would learn from his first boss. Age 16 would find him driving from Brownwood, Texas to Wisconsin in a one-ton, Chevy pickup truck to attend Mercury School. He had just received his license and found that East Coast traffic could be somewhat daunting. He said, "It did not occur to me to be afraid until I was well underway." A personality trait that has served him well over this years as his ventures became progressively more challenging.

One of which would find him hauling 130-foot roof trusses from El Paso, Texas to Las Vegas, Nevada to build the New York, New York Casino. Tommy said, "This was supposed to be a one-time trip -- I was one-of-four drivers -- the only problem was we lost three drivers. When you turned a corner with those loads, the last 30 feet really swung wide. I was the only one who made it to the final destination with my load intact, so I ended up making a lot of returns." This is not such an unusual story for Davis, who seems to specialize in tackling the unusual and difficult.
