The Quadrate
Mannheim is also known as Quadratestadt, because of its unique layout of the inner city which dates back to the city's foundation in the 17th century. The Quadrate is the area where most hotels and restaurants are located. It is divided into a systemic grid of 177 squares, which are identified by the combination of a letter and a number. The letters identify the block's location from north to south with A through K being location on the west of the Kurpfalzstraße, and with L to U being located on the east of the Kurpfalzstraße. The numbers identify the block's location away from the Kurpfalzstraße. Precise addresses are indicated by an additional number to indicate where on the block it is located. Addresses are numbered counter-clockwise for blocks A through K, and clockwise for block L to U.
