Organization of the List

Selecting a tool that will work for your pedagogical or instructional goals can seem daunting. To help match types of interaction or tasks with free, cross-platform tools that may work for you and your students, this website is organized into four categories:

  • Communication and Collaboration

      • including tools for discussions, virtual meetings, curation, whiteboard, project management

  • Visual and Audio Presentations

      • including tools for creation and editing of video, audio, screencasts, and images

  • Assignments and Practice

      • including tools for assignments and practice to promote spaced retrieval, metacognitive reflection, etc.

  • Student Portfolios and Work Submission

      • including tools for process and showcase portfolios as well as general collection of assignments

Information for Each Tool

Each category's page lists a variety of websites, apps, and tools. For each tool, you will find a description that includes:

  • a sample image of the workspace

  • where to access or download the tool

  • some primary and secondary uses for the tool

  • and an overview of free features (or a notation where a tool is not free)

  • tips or common pitfalls where applicable
