There's a lot of new smart speaker or digital assistant products on the market these days and the latest to arrive is the third-generation amazon echo dot with clock. This diminutive little package features all the power of Amazon's Alexa digital assistant with the added functionality of a bedside alarm clock.
I had a chance to wake up with the new echo dot with clock for a week and here's what I found. What makes the third-generation echo dot with clock different the key feature of the dot with clock as the name implies is the addition of an LED digital pinpoint display to the front of the dot.
The display can show the time, temperature or the status of a timer. if you sat one day while adding some LED lights doesn't actually change much about this device and it's true core purpose it does make it a bit more appropriate to use beside your bed.
Setting up this device like all echo devices is easy and straightforward. You plug it in and then follow the instructions that you'll get verbally or via the Alexa app that basically involves getting connected to your home's Wi-Fi network and then signing into or creating an Amazon account.
Once that's done, you can manage the echo dot with clock settings inside the Alexa app. A built-in light sensor automatically adjusts the displays brightness day or night and I never found it too bright for sleeping.
The echo dot is made for the bedside. It's compact size is perfect for a nightstand and you can ask Alexa to set an alarm for you each morning or ask her to set the alarm for every weekday and she'll comply and you don't need to worry about remembering to turn it on every night.
You can customize the sound Alexa will make as your alarm clock. Inside the Alexa app there's a handful of different sounds and not a whole lot of difference between them they're all kind of can sounding I guess. It's kind of like what you'd find on your phone but you should be able to find something that won't make you throw the dot with clock across the room.
When the alarm rings you can tap the top of the device to snooze it or just ask your bedside assistant to shut it off.
Ssince it is a smaller speaker the echo dot with clock is definitely less powerful than some of other echo devices that doesn't seem to compromise sound quality overall, especially if you want to listen to music or podcasts. Plus this device is meant to be a supplementary or satellite to your overall system.
In my opinion the speaker sounds quite good for its small size. It gets good and loud and the audio is also crisp and clear. The bass is actually pretty decent too on this speaker. The sound overall is big and clear and I was surprised by how good it sounded.
The real power of this little device is the Alexa digital assistant feature. Now like pretty much every other Alexa smart speaker this one has voice control that you can use to control your smart home or to just manage your life.
You can ask for a daily news briefing as you're laying in bed or while you get ready to go to work in the morning, you can ask Alexa for smart home control commands like turning lights on or off. She can also check the weather for you and a lot more.
You can make audio calls using drop-in by asking your digital assistant to drop in echo dot echo plus or office or kitchen or whatever you've pulled that echo device it will attempt a device to device audio Call which must be answered by someone on the other end In order to connect.
You'd rather listen to a book than hear news briefings. The echo dot with clock can read audiobooks to you from audible .
Now it's a bit of a process but it's enough for you to know that once you're signed into your audible account using the Amazon Alexa app you can just ask your assistant here to play the title of the book and she's all over it. Now overall this is another version of an already very capable device.
Well I didn't love the alarm sound since I found them kind of digital or technical sounding and I prefer something a little more natural in the morning. The job that it does of waking you up is just great, it works just fine.
The addition of the LED display certainly makes a lot of sense for the bedroom for the intended alarm clock configuration. When it comes to Alexa is a personal digital assistant she's infinitely capable and responsive and I do love having her in my life.
I have an Amazon echo and echo sub and the second generation echo show 10 inch and I think they are all great devices they're easy to set up and use. You can set timers and alarms you can listen to news updates or fall asleep to a book.
If you're looking for a compact yet ultra smart personal assistant speaker that doubles as a very capable alarm clock, the echo dot with clock is a really good choice. It sells for about $80 Canadian and of course you can find it at amazon. The power of Amazon's Alexa digital assistant with the added functionality of a bedside alarm clock.
