Section 504:
What is Section 504?: Section 504 requires that school districts provide free appropriate public education (FAPE) to qualified students who have physical or mental disabilities that limit one or several major life activities (TEA, 2021).
Where did this come from? Section 504 was passed into law in 1973 as part of the Rehabilitation Act (Econmetrica Inc, 2021). Section 504 was created in order to protect individuals with disabilities.
How does this affect general education teachers?: Teachers are responsible for implementing designated strategies and services on a student's plan (SECACPG, n.d.). Due to section 504, teachers are not able to decline a student's plan.
