Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) :
What does Least Restrictive Environment mean (LRE) mean? An LRE is an essential component in a child's IEP. LRE influences where a child spends their time at school, how services are provided, and the relationships the child develops within the school (Center for Parent Information and Resources, 2022). The law states that special education students are to remain in an educational environment with their non-identified peers unless there is a compelling reason for them to be separated (Chapel, 2021).
Where did this term come from? The concept of LRE came from the federal law, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
How does this affect general education teachers? The teacher may have to come up with some accommodations or modifications in order to help the student achieve academic success.
