English Language Learners (ELL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) :
What does English Language Learners (ELL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) mean? ELL is anyone who is learning English as a second language (Patino, 2022). ESL is an approach designed to teach ELL students English language skills. The approach is a program of techniques and a special curriculum designed to help aid in students learning English language skills (Office For Civil Rights, 2020).
Where did this come from? The term "ELL" was once labeled as "ESL". This was changed in 2011 when it was realized that for some English language learners, English isn't their second language (Western Governance University, 2022).
How does this affect general education teachers? It may take teachers more time to come up with an effective way to make sure ELL or ELS students are understanding the content. Teachers may use pictures or hand signals to help them teach.
