Character-Based Storytelling

'Helirun' is a virtual reality game using brain waves. The players can control the game characters by using their brainwave data, and they can also explore the basic knowledge about the brain and the brainwaves by playing the game. It also draws the interest of the players in neuroscience while playing. It also encourages the children, the main participants, to be interested in this content and at the same time help them have a better understanding of the brain and brainwaves.

Storyboard

We have briefly organized the lessons on brain science for even very young kids who visit the exhibition can easily understand and created stories and narratives to efficiently deliver the content. Considering that the main participants are children, we tried to put the basic lessons related to brain and brainwave in the stories of the game. The lessons on brain science used in the stories are as follows:

1. An electronic signal is generated in the brain, and we call it a brainwave.

2. Brainwave moves through neurons which are like paths in the brain.

3. When you feel down, your concentration decreases, and so does the brainwave in charge of concentration.

Character and Environment Design

We designed characters and the surrounding environment which can implicitly deliver the stories.

Guide Scenario

A scenario is prepared to provide a guide before playing the game to enhance the participants' understanding of the exhibition.

BCI Interaction

The Helirun exhibition experience allows the users to interact with characters utilizing Brain Computer Interface (BCI).

In this content, a Muse was used for BCI. Kids can easily wear it, and it is adjustable to various sizes, making it suitable in an exhibition environment.

Brainwave Visualization

Booth Experience Using Cave VR

Three projectors were used to map and project the exhibition video on the curved walls. To create an immersive experience for the participants, a customized exhibition table was placed to put their hands on while enjoying the exhibition.
