Four "Hour of Code" activities where blocks of code were used to finish short puzzle games.
A coding activity based of the 2013 animated film 'Frozen', I didn't really learn anything but got a refresher on block coding. I thought the use of blocks of code was interesting, as it can really be useful to help kids break into the world of coding.
A coding activity based of the popular sandbox game 'Minecraft', I didn't really learn anything but got a refresher on block coding. I thought the use of blocks of code to solve puzzles was interesting.
A coding activity based of the 2017 DC film 'Wonder Woman', I didn't really learn anything but got a refresher on block coding. I thought the change of layout from scene to scene was interesting as it kept things from getting repetitive.
A coding activity based of the popular IOS game 'Flappy Bird', I didn't really learn anything but got a refresher on block coding. I thought it was interesting how such an influental game can be completely recreated simply with block coding.
All used block coding, but to achieve different things. Frozen and Minecraft were similar, with most of the code moving the character and then making them interact with objects, but Wonder Woman had drastic changes in scene after each level, and Flappy Bird was completely different as it was a recreation of the app. I chose the Flappy Bird activity because it was the only other recognizable theme, and I had never done it before. I learnt that block coding can be used to create many different things.
Hour of Code doesen't really relate to my class other than the fact that both Flash and Coding are done on Computers, and code can be used to create more complex Flash documents. Hour of Code is relevant in my life because I've done it 3 years in a row and it has an effect on my grade. One thing that I use that's coded is video games. I have no idea what the coding entails, which is why I seek a future in graphic design and animation, not coding.
The only relation I can see between Hour of Code and this class is that Hour of Code can help people who are interested in coding or people who didn't know they were interested in coding find out and put them on the right track to seek a future in code.
This video has several interviews by different people with completely different professions, but they all have one thing in common: Coding. All of them use programming to help make their jobs and the effect they have on the world more pro-efficient. I liked the different perspectives on coding. I learned how involved programming is in modern society. I also learnt that programming is used in everything from art, medicine, agriculture, entertainment, and law enforcement. The last thing I learnt is that coding is the future, and should be learnt by all.
President Obama speaks about the future of the world and how progress is made everyday, and how programming is important in the bright future ahead. I liked how he spoke regarding coding in schools, for I agree that technology should be taught not just nation wide, but world wide. I learnt that the countries high school graduation amount is at an all time high. I also learnt that coding is not as huge a part of the American education as it should be, with some states not even allowing computer science classes to count towards graduation credits. The last thing I learnt that President Obama was taking steps to change that, and allow for more American students to gain access to the resources they need to get ahead in life.
