Introductions & Charting the Course

Before we get started, please revisit your Field Guide and answer the two questions in the Curriculum Compacting section.

Simulation #1

For our first simulation, we'll work in small groups to take a look at some results from a 6th grade math test. Please find a group of 2-4 and then we'll proceed.

Simulation #2

For our second simulation, choose one of the two Compactors listed below to examine more closely (the first example is for a 1st Grader in Reading and the second example is for a 6th Grader in Spelling).

In a small group of 2-4 people, discuss the Compactor including a discussion of the assessment utilized & the knowledge the child had already mastered. How did the teacher measure this, especially in concept-based content such as reading? Now think about the next steps for the child. In particular, what support will the child need? What materials might need to be provided? Click the padlet link below to share your thoughts.

Guided Practice: Options

Option #1: Think about the Pre-assessment ideas that are available and the ones you've seen in today's talk. Use the resources below to find some options for the course/subject into which you'd like to embed pre-assessment and compacting.

Option #2: What happens when one of your students is leaps and bounds ahead of your other students? Think about the need to provide your students with opportunities to become experts in an area. Here is a template that you could use to design such an option. Design an option for a student who demonstrates mastery over your curriculum.

One option for storing the work that the student produces and "moderating" how it's displayed would be to use a Seesaw Portfolio (see more at https://web.seesaw.me/.
