Family Support combines direct care services and caregiver training provided by a BCBA (rather than an RBT). This service is geared towards high support needs clients and/or clients who engage in high crisis behaviors posing a significant risk to themselves or others. For high crisis behaviors, this service can be utilized to develop and implement a crisis plan. This service can also be utilized to provide an advocate at IEP meetings, social services, disability services, or any other time an advocate is needed. Family consultation is offered as a private pay service only, as it is not covered by health insurance.
Being a parent or caregiver can feel isolating, even without additional barriers. Caregivers give everything they have to their children and families, leaving little energy or time for themselves. For many people, it is important to connect to others in similar situations. Contact us for more information.
High support needs individuals need high levels of support in multiple areas and typically have comorbidities that have previously created barriers to receiving services or assistance. This can include individuals who are non-vocal, communicating through gestures, pointing, and sometimes even unsafe behaviors. Individuals who are unable to complete basic daily needs tasks such as dressing, eating, bathing, and toileting. An individual in this group is well past the age in which these skills are typically developed. All too often, we see such individuals on whom other agencies or service providers have given up, especially as they get older and into adulthood.
We do not give up so easily.
You may be asking why high support needs are clumped in with high crisis behaviors. They are very different, despite the common misconception that they go hand in hand. Unfortunately, we live in a world in which an individual is significantly more likely to be the victim of SA or other abuse if they are not fully independent. This is especially true for individuals unable to bathe or dress themselves, as they are likely have strangers assisting them and are rarely able to advocate for themselves. We do everything we can to assist with the development of these skills while also teaching self-advocacy in any way possible. At DIBS, we have developed some outside-of-the-box thinking to assist with these skills and are always coming up with new ways to get around limitations.
It is for this reason that we feel high support needs require this level of service.
High crisis behaviors are those that pose a significant safety risk to oneself or others. Individuals who demonstrate such behaviors are often suspended from school, Baker acted, arrested, significantly injure themselves or others (or threaten to do so), and/or engage in suicidal or homicidal ideations and language.
Family Support is a multi-tiered support system that is designed to meet your family's specific needs. This can involve:
Training care, nurses, or staff from other organizations that help provide care to your loved one.
Developing a crisis plan that outlines when to call for help and/or emergency responders.
Direct care provided by a BCBA to provide a higher level of support for teaching daily living skills.
Group and individual services.
Referrals to and collaboration with other professionals.
Around the clock support available by phone or telehealth or even--at its highest level--a support member on call to show up at your location for support if needed (these services are subject to limitations and restrictions).
There are far more services involved with this level of care and each case will have its own care package.
