What is DI?
Destination Imagination (DI) is a project-based learning program designed to complement K-12 and college/university education by building students’ critical thinking, creative problem solving, teamwork, and leadership skills. Annually, DI offers Team Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), fine arts, service learning, and early learning. By selecting and solving a DI Challenge, students collaborate, explore their passions, discover their unique abilities, and learn new skills. All registered student teams have the opportunity to showcase their Challenge solutions at local competitions and may advance to Affiliate (statewide) and global competitions.
What is the Goal of DI?
The goal of Destination Imagination is to inspire and equip students with invaluable 21st century skills, creative outlets, and the confidence needed to succeed in school, their careers, and beyond. Our goal here in New York is to bring DI to as many New York students, schools, and communities as possible.
What is the history of DI?
Destination Imagination was founded in 1999. This global nonprofit organization continues to grow with the support of 38,000 volunteers in 30 different countries. Since its founding, DI has impacted more than one million participants.
Why participate in DI
The experiences students have participating in DI are extremely unique, empowering, and unlike anything that can be taught in the classroom. It is the student-led design and lack of adult interference that make DI so transformative for students. The program is designed to be fun, challenging, age-appropriate, and to foster teamwork. DI connects students with similar interests locally and around the globe! Check out our About page to learn more about DI.
Who runs DI?
Quebec & Ottawa Destination Imagination is powered entirely by dedicated volunteers. Our team is composed of an Affiliate, a Regional Affiliate, Affiliate Organizers and a core group of experienced volunteer leaders. Over 60 volunteers, some of whom are alumni of the program, come together each year to staff our tournament.
How can DI improve my child's education?
You see the unique and talented individual your child is and want to give them every opportunity to grow, learn, and prosper. The Destination Imagination program not only encourages creativity, self-awareness, and confidence for students with a whole range of skills and interests, it also teaches patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others, and the collaborative problem-solving process. In fact, DI links closely with the Federal Government's Skills for Success, which identifies skills needed to thrive and succeed in the workplace. They include Communication, Creativity & Innovation, Problem Solving, Reading, and Collaboration.
What does a DI solution or challenge look like?
The best way to experience DI? To see it! Check out the 1st Place Global Finals solution to 2019’s Scientific Challenge, Medical Mystery. In this Challenge, teams were asked to:
Research the human body and medical conditions that affect it.
Create and present a story about a medical mystery that affects a human character.
Design and build a representation that shows the medical mystery and at least one symptom.
Present an action or scene that is shown from two or more perspectives at the same time.
Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.
