Health & Biomedical Science
"To empower and inspire students through a Project-Based Learning program where high school students learn 21st-century skills and have the opportunity to launch their careers through participation in the design and fabrication of real-world valued products for NASA."
We are the Dow High Space Farmers (DHSF)!
An energetic group of Michigan students from Midland's Dow High School, who are also Space Botany Researchers and growing future scientists in STEM. We are part of NASA-sponsored programs, "Growing Beyond Earth" and "NASA HUNCH (High School Students United with NASA to Create Hardware)".
We stay in close touch with NASA scientists, conducting space botany research based on rigorous procedures, while also keeping in touch with our creative and critical-thinking side through student-proposed original research and experimentation. We present our research to NASA scientists and administrators in the GBE Research Symposium, the International Space Station Research & Development Conference, and the Michigan Space Grant Consortium Conference.
Our space botany research ignited our curiosity about how growing plants in space affects astronauts' physical and psychological health. Joining NASA HUNCH's Health and Biomedical Science program was our first attempt at tapping into mental health in space. Our cortisol sweatband project encompasses various ways to apply our STEM knowledge and skills for a great cause. We thank Dr. Florance Gold for introducing this program to us at the ISS R&D Conference 2022.
DHSF Sweat Detection System is composed of two recent inventions: Sweat Pad & Wireless Sweat Level Sensor. This system will help us determine if we have the proper amount of sweat for cortisol analysis.
