In the hands of an expert tabla player, the tabla can make all kinds of fantastic sounds, but there are a couple of dozen commonly produced sounds - dhaa, ga, ge, gi, ka, ke, dhi, dhin, tin, tun, tit, ti, te, Ta, tr, naa, ne, re, kat, taa, dhaage, tiTa, tirikiTa. Of course, these are just vocalizations of the actual sounds produced by the tabla. They are called bol, and it is these bols that are combined in various ways to get many interesting rhythm patterns.

Teental is the most commonly used taal in kathak and in classical music since it has a very symmetrical structure against which performances can be laid. Teental has 16 matras, divided into 4 bhags, such that each bhag has 4 matras. The first beat is the sum and the 9th beat is called khali, wave (meaning empty). To count the Teental, the audience claps on the first beat, claps on the 5th beat, then waves on the 9th beat and lastly again claps on the 13th beat; these three claps give the rhythm its name. Teen is the Hindi word for three. The theca for the taal is given alongside. X marks the sum. 2 and 3 represent the tali, and the 0 is the khali.

I still can't believe how she spontaneously arrived at our house at 4:00 PM today with a bunch of dairy milk chocolates, she said she'd received my address from one of my school friends on Instagram who was her ex dance student, and she apologized for arriving all of a sudden at our doorstep today evening but she explained that she actually wanted to surprise me haha, anyways me, mum and my teacher spent 3 whole hours reminiscing about those beautiful days when we were getting dance lessons from her twice a week (she taught both bharatanatyam and kathak). I grew nostalgic as soon as I thought of those innumerable mischievous moments where all of us dance students would form fake excuses to convince our teacher to keep a short duration for our classes lol, I still remember how me and my dance mates would grow anxious and start palpitating whenever we'd start dancing in front of our teacher, because she'd carry a long wooden stick in her hands with which she'd strike the wrists and ankles of the students who couldn't perform the dance steps or hand mudras ( called hastak in kathak )properly , so us students would always try to perfect our steps and postures out of fear for our teacher, although she was pretty strict and domineering during her dance lessons, she was the one whose eyes would always shine with pride whenever she'd see us students perform for her on stages during cultural events (like Durga Puja, Kali Puja that are celebrated with great pomp and show here in West Bengal). I still can't forget the way she'd embrace us lovingly whenever we'd step down from our dance stage after delivering our performance.

I do remember pretty vividly how back in 8th standard she'd personally taught me the kathak dance steps for the song "pyaar Kiya toh Darna kya" from the age old movie Mughal e Azam because I was appearing in a dance contest that was conducted during Durga Puja, and I won the first place in the contest which did help me to cut off my introvert nature to a huge extent, cuz that performance of mine made me super popular in my circle of peers and even amongst school teachers lol. (I'm actually Nepalese by ethnicity so I kinda faced subtle racism and alienation from people around me, but all such ill feeling immediately evaporated in 8th standard when I gave my kathak performance on the song "pyar Kiya toh Darna kya",people said how my chakkars were excellent)

The words were so absurd against the na-dhin-dhin-na that it took a few moments to figure out that the maestro was addressing someone who was recording the recital on his phone. As a dancer who is well-versed in Hindustani music, Maharaj is no stranger to recording. And yet, at that moment of complete immersion in his art, the sight of a phone capturing it was so offensive that he, otherwise an exemplar of propriety, felt compelled to respond with equal crassness.

Powerhouse performer Ranveer Singh has left audiences awestruck with his stellar act in the blockbuster film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani.

Moreover, Ranveer and Tota Roy Choudhury have especially impressed the fans with their kathak performance in the song 'Dola Re Dola' in the film. 2351a5e196
