Our school is comprised of students from differing socio-economic backgrounds.
Students from low-income families are deprived of opportunities for family outings that would enrich and expose students to out of school experiences that enhance the educational learning journey. Thus, we started Project GrARTitude, a stimulating museum journey that provides Primary 3 classmates from low-income families a chance to visit the Peranakan Museum in Singapore to learn more about the Peranakan culture and heritage. We became museum ambassadors, sharing our knowledge of Peranakan history and tradition with one another.

We felt that we needed to create a community that reflects on and is more conscious of its
environment. We thought that one way we could foster such a community is through promoting reading. Some of the ways we promoted reading were by implementing 26 class libraries, connecting students with the authors themselves, and sharing our story on local radio. We plan to have a book and song festival in the community to have a more far-reaching impact. To date, more than thirty community schools plan to attend.

We did field research on the Nanguo River that runs next to our school. We noticed there was a lot of pollution in the form of garbage and wastewater. We decided to work together to take care of the Nanguo River. After learning about the river’s ecology, history, and eco-engineering, we started to think about how to heal the Nanguo River. We appealed to schools nearby the river, as well as community members and the government for support. We tried to bring the community together to care about our beautiful river. Hopefully, with our support, the Nanguo River will flow forever.

We were disappointed with the high concentration of waste in our community. Our own school consumes approximately 250,000 pieces of paper annually. We came up with a plan to recycle this huge amount of paper and reduce the amount of garbage in our community. We met with the mayor to explain our plan and he offered us his support. We also visited a local company that dealt with garbage collection and recycling. The manager there also assured his support in helping us recycle the materials. A huge container was brought to our school and the whole school cooperated in collecting the recyclables. We eventually added extra small containers for glass and plastic waste.

Food security is a major problem in Kenya and around the around. 75% of Kenya is arid or semi-arid, so it is difficult to grow food. We realized that certain plants, such as cacti, grow easily in these climates. What if we were able to develop food crops that grew like cacti but produced foods like maize, sweet potatoes, and beans? If we could develop such crops, then we could turn barren parts of the country into a nourishing breadbasket. In order to create such remarkable crops, we would need a team of scientists to help.

Two of the most serious problems that affect our community is improper waste management and natural disasters. We thought of a way to solve both of these problems with a single solution. Eventually, we came up with the Floating First Aid Kit. It is important that every family have a first aid kit in case of natural disasters like flooding. They can also put important documents inside to keep them safe. We were able to finance the making of the kits by collecting and recycling garbage. We made the kits out of recycled PET bottles. Student leaders went to some of the most at-risk communities in Navotas to advertise the kits. At least ten families benefited from the project.

Because we had a little chili plant growing in our classroom, we became fascinated with plants. We wanted to grow some for ourselves, but we realized there was nowhere at our school suitable to do so. We decided that if we could clean up the dump pile at our school, we would have the perfect spot for a garden. We thought up a plan: to clear out the space and do all the hard work necessary to turn the space into a vibrantly colorful garden area. Soon, the garden was flourishing! Us 7th graders started teaching other younger students how to take care of the garden. Even the news came by to interview us.

The trash pile next to our school was growing bigger and bigger every year and we realized that nobody was going to take care of the problem. So, we decided to do something about it ourselves. We thought that we could cooperate to clean up the garbage, recycle it, and turn the area into a park. We decided to recycle the garbage and use it to beautify our park. For example, we used bottles and tins as flower pots. Instead of a garbage heap, the park became a serene place where everyone can unwind after a hectic day and enjoy the scenery.

Our project, the Healthy and Nutritious Food Movement, aims to raise awareness of the importance of healthy food choices among all students, teachers, and employees at our school. We were concerned by the school canteen vendors who sold unhealthy food and snacks, and also by students who consumed unhealthy food unaware of the health risks. As a solution, we persuaded the principal to create new rules so that school canteen vendors would stop selling unhealthy food and students would be discouraged from buying unhealthy food. We also planted fruits and vegetables and raised fish at school. We even launched a program where students and teachers brought healthy lunch from home once a week.
