The Dexter High School Dance Team is a fully self-funded varsity sports team composed of a committed group of highly trained dancers who represent Dexter High School and the Dexter community on a regional and national level. The team was started by the graduating class of 2000 and began as a Pom team, evolving into the competition dance team they are today. The team is nationally ranked and has consistently placed in the top 10 at the national championships for the past several years.
Each season commences with tryouts in April of each year. The team begins practice in May and starts to prepare for the Universal Dance Association (UDA) Summer Training Camp, typically held in July. At camp, the team makes a bid for the UDA National Dance Team Championship based on outstanding performance in a variety of categories. Each year since 2014 the team has qualified for Nationals.
Following camp, the team begins choreography for their Game Day, Jazz, and Pom routines, as well as learning sideline and halftime routines for the fall varsity football season. The team supports the community and their school throughout the year by participating in spirit activities at the school, supporting the football and basketball teams at home games, and engaging in volunteer activities as a group.
The team’s competitive season begins in early November with the first of three UDA regional competitions in Michigan and Illinois. The season culminates at the UDA National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, FL in February where the team competes as a Division II Small Group Varsity Team in Jazz, Pom, and Game Day. It takes the full support of the dancers’ coaches, families, and community members to make this happen each year. The team is proud to represent their community and deeply appreciate the support they receive.
