We are focused on scout safety! All of our leaders have position specific training, which is approved by BSA. All of our events have two deep leadership, with at least one female leader present. Youth Protection Training, required for all Scouts BSA volunteers -- is something that our volunteers complete every two years. Additionally, BSA has an adult leader selection proecess that has multiple layers for safety -- including criminal background checks and other screening effors administered by nationally recognized third party.
You may notice our adult leadership wearing the Inclusive Scouting Award (ISA) Knot. It's a knot you earn by wearing -- here's an explanation from the Scouts for Equality website: "the ISA also identifies the wearer as an ally – someone who is “safe” to approach and someone with whom you can be open and honest. In this way, it is modeled after the “safe space” programs used in high schools over the last decade, which have been shown to reduce stress for marginalized youth even if they never speak to someone – just knowing that an ally is present is a significant relief."
Yes. It's Scouts BSA, which has separate troops for boys and girls. Girls can earn all the same merit badges that boys can, and both can earn Eagle Rank too! Prior to that, girls who wanted to join cub scouts or a troop could not -- but we're excited to say that BSA has made the choice for inclusivity.
While we are making sure that girls who move on from cub scouts have the ability to continue on in their scouting journey, we welcome all girls -- including those who have NOT been previously involved with scouting. We'd love to have you!
Have questions? BSA has answers. Here are some of the FAQ about girls in scouting.
We'd like to recognize the first group of girls in Dexter to achieve their Arrow of Light rank! This image is of scouts from Pack 477 who crossed over in 2022. Congratulations, and thank you for paving the way for the next generation of Girls in Scouts BSA!
Scouting is dedicated to serving others. From a young age, scouts who participate in Cub Scouts learn about giving back to the community, and at the older levels of scouting, this dedication continues. Our scouts will be brainstorming ideas for giving back based on their past experience at Dexter Daze, Apple Daze, Dexter Trash Cleanup, Food/Toy Drives, raking leaves for community members, Dexter Lions Christmas Tree lot, and more!
We'd love to have you follow us on Facebook, so we can share about what we're up to, as well as things of interest in the community.
