The word we use for a device that captures images is based on the term Camera Obscura, or "Dark Room". While modern photography students may have snapped thousands of photos without ever handling film or emulsion, learning the planning, care, and deliberation of the photochemical process can help them take their skills to new heights.
A darkroom is also a great place to upcycle old technologies, and even to use some kitchen chemistry for projects like Caffenol (Coffee/washing soda/Vitamin C) film development and hacking disposable cameras.
It's also a place where indelible memories can be fixed for storage and retrieval, so our digital future has analog grain and fuzz, too.
