Devandran Karunakaran was born and reared in Singapore, which contains one of the busiest and largest ports in the world. This backdrop of a bustling urban society based on the economics of expedient import and export was an initial factor in his decision to concentrate his early legal career on representing clients in ship financing transactions and advising offshore and renewable energy firms.
Mr. Karunakaran grew up in a happy and loving home with a mother who specialized in authentic Southeast Asian cuisine and a father who was the principal of an international school. He has a large extended family, most of whom reside in Singapore.
After completing his mandatory 2-and-a-half-year national service at 21, Karunakaran migrated to the United Kingdom to assert his independence and launch his career.
At the University of Leicester, Karunakaran studied law. The university has a reputation for providing advanced learning opportunities to its students as one of the leading research universities. Mr. Karunakaran excelled in contract law, a branch of law concerned with regulating, enforcing, and interpreting legal and commercial agreements between businesses.
Also of particular interest to him was public international law, also known as The Law of Nations. This corpus of law contains the norms and legal guidelines that govern and regulate international relations.
Devandran Karunakaran has pleasant memories of the diverse backgrounds and ethnicities of the students he befriended while attending Leicester University. Numerous of the close friendships he forged are still in existence today. His university roommate served as best man at the weddings of Devanand Karunakaran and his wife.
Mr. Karunakaran was a prominent member of the university rugby team, where he competed at the collegiate level. After concluding his postgraduate studies, Devandran relocated to London to begin his legal career. He secured a training contract position with a well-known international law firm headquartered in the United Kingdom.
The market for trainee solicitors in the United Kingdom is highly competitive, and training contracts are difficult to acquire. However, this training course is required to become a solicitor in the United Kingdom. Karunakaran was fortunate to swiftly secure a training contract with a reputable UK law firm. He was unable to pass up such an excellent opportunity. Therefore, he relocated to London after graduating from college rather than returning to Singapore.
Mr. Karunakaran has resided in London for nearly thirteen years and considers it his second home. In addition, he made several professional connections and personal alliances that led him to work for two international law firms and to reside and work in Piraeus, Greece.
Devandran chose to specialize in ship finance law and offshore energy and renewables due to his well-known and esteemed legal expertise. In these roles, he strives to integrate his technical legal knowledge with his commercial and business understanding to benefit his clients.
Eventually, in the year 2020, Devandran Karunakaran joined PT Indo Energy Solutions as an advisor to the board of directors, a position that grew to be all-encompassing. While the company's headquarters are in Indonesia, Devandran maintained his residence in Singapore and commuted to various locations in Indonesia as the work required.
After returning to Singapore in 2015, Karunakaran encountered his future wife, Cornelia, working in Germany and on secondment in Singapore. She and her family are originally from Halle, Germany, now Devandran's secondary metropolis.
Mr. Karunakaran appreciates cooking in addition to his close relationship with and cares for his parents. His mother, aunts, and grandmother, who are superb cooks, instilled in him a passion for the culinary arts. His goal is to prepare the foods he enjoyed as a child healthfully and well-balanced.
Devandran and his wife Cornelia are extremely concerned about the global environment. They engage in sustainable practices whenever possible to leave their daughter a world in which sustainability is a priority. With this desire in mind, Mr. Karunakaran has established a personal objective to engage in more environment-related volunteer work over the next few years. As he believes that no one should go hungry in this day and age, he is presently involved in food security volunteer work.
Devananda Karunakaran and his family share a passion for travel. In addition to the travel that both of their professions required before they met, he and his wife have visited Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Switzerland, and Australia. They hope to instil in their young daughter a passion for travel and discovering new locations.
His family places a high priority on maintaining physical fitness. In addition to consuming healthy foods, they exercise, get plenty of fresh air, and use natural substances to heal and sustain the body.
Devandran Karunakaran and his family engage in philanthropy because they consider their family exceptionally privileged. To aid Ukrainian refugees, they have made donations. In addition, he volunteered his time and expertise as a trustee for a Hindu temple affiliated with his family.
